IN SERVICE

Navy Seaman Recruit Trent A. Shorter has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Shorter is a 1996 graduate of Giles High School in Pearisburg.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Gary W. Burris has returned from a six-month deployment aboard the USS Supply. Burris is home ported in Norfolk. He graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1984 and joined the Navy in 1991. He is the son of Marvin and Mary Burris of Pulaski.

Navy Seaman Thomas J. Kington has returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas and Arabian Gulf. He was aboard the missile cruiser USS Gettysburg. Kington graduated from Christiansburg High School in 1993 and joined the Navy in August 1995. He is the son of Thomas and Maria Kington of Christiansburg.

Two area individuals recently graduated from the motor transport operator course at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. They are:

Army Reserve Pvt. Gregory W. Rupe, a 1996 graduate of Pulaski County High School. He is the son of Donald and Rebecca Rupe of Pulaski.

Army Pat. Tabatha A. Lawson, a 1991 graduate of Shawsville High School. She is the daughter of David and Irene Lawson of Elliston.

Marine Pfc. Richard A. Jennings graduated from the Marine Corps Basic Combat Engineer Course at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C. Jennings graduated from Giles High School in 1994 and joined the Marine Corps in June 1996. He is the son of Richard and Rosemarie Jennings of Pearisburg.

Marine Cpl. Michael C. Daley has returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS Saipan Amphibious Ready Group. Daley is home based at Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C. Daley joined the Marine Corps in March 1995. He is the son of David Daley of Pilot.

Navy Seaman Kris Wiedegreen has completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Wiedegreen graduated from Blacksburg High School in 1996. He is the son of Eric and Sandra Wiedegreen of Blacksburg.
