BARNES, Louise, 91, of Martinsville, died Monday, February 17, 1997. Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday, Christ Episcopal Church, Martinsv ille. Arrangements by McKee Funeral Services.

BARRETT, Perry, 86, of Bedford, died Sunday, February 16, 1997 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Hickory, Miss. on December 27, 1910, a son of the late John Thomas Barrett and Lizzie Pearl McCarty Barrett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Margaret Coleman Barrett, four brothers and four sisters. He was an Army veteran serving in World War II, and a member of Bedford Christian Church. Perry was a retired employee from the City of Bedford. He is survived by two sons, John T. and Dianne Barrett, Tim Barrett, both of Bedford; two daughters, M. Cathy Barrett and Suzanne B. and Travis Dooley, both of Bedford; five beloved granddaughters, Melissa Barrett, Volens, Va., Tracy Dooley, Cynthia Dooley, Alysia Barrett, Michelle B. Hampton, and her husband, Raymond, all of Bedford. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 1997 at Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Kenneth E. Burger officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with military honors given by American Legion Post #16. Memorials may be made to the Bedford Residential Center, 1615 Longwood Ave., Bedford. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.

BATTS, Bobby M., 62, of Blue Ridge, passed away Monday, February 17, 1997. He was a loving husband and father. Mr. Batts is survived by his wife, Fonda S. Batts; four sons, Darryll Tipton, Billy Batts, Todd Batts, and Greg Batts; daughter, Lori Batts; two daughters-in-law, Donna Tipton and Jennifer Batts; two grandsons, Joshua Tipton and Zackary Batts. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 1997 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. David Sneed officiating. Interment will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. COX, Virgie Reed, 84, of Indian Valley, passed away Sunday, February 16, 1997, at Radford Community Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Elisha and Angeline Ann Phillips Reed. Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Cox; and a son, Roger E. (Mickey) Cox. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Paul A. and Bernice Cox, Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn C. and Danny Baker, Richmond, Pauline C. and Swanson Pendleton, Roanoke; one sister and brother-in-law, Lula and Hobert Marshall, Indian Valley; sister-in-law, Edna Cox Reed, Willis; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. GRAHAM, Sarah Blanche, 80, of New Castle, died at her home on Monday, February 17, 1997. Sarah retired from Craig County Social Services in 1978 with 40 years of service, rising to the position of Director. She was a lifelong member of New Castle Christian Church, and was recently recognized for having served 50 years as Church Clerk. Sarah was an active Charter Member of Mountain Chapter #168 Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron of her Chapter and Grand Representative to Iowa. She was also a Charter Member and Past President of the New Castle Garden Club, and held state and national life memberships. Many county residents considered her our most knowledgeable citizen in the area of Human Relations. She is survived by cousins, Beverly Wright, New Castle, Robin and husband, Matt Clark and children, Cameron, W. Va., Tammy and husband, Paul Andrews, Graham, N. C., Tonya and husband, Lloyd Hicks and children, Eden, N. C., Robert S. and Darlene Adams, New Castle; also companions and special people, Ella Mae Greenway and her daughter, Mary Ellen; also a host of friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 1997 at the New Castle Christian Church, with Dr. Ernie Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Paitsel Funeral Home, New Castle. Eastern Star services will be conducted 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. JONES, Mamie Elizabeth, 87 of Roanoke passed away February 16, 1997 at Friendship Manor. She was born March 2, 1909 and was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert M. Jones; daughter, Ruth Furrow; son, Thomas W. Jones; and a great-grandson, Phillip Matthew Jones. She is survived by a son, Richard L. (Pete) Jones and wife Barbara; six grandchildren and their spouses, Richard L. (Jyke) Jones Jr. and Paula, James W. Jones and Becky, Thomas W. Jones and Kim, Charlotte Beckner and Jay, Kenneth Furrow and Leigh, Charlotte Beckner and Jay, and Kevin Furrow; also surviving are 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon Wednesday, February 19, 1997 at Lotz Roanoke Chapel with Reverend David A. Kirk officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. KARRIKER, Lloyd Burton, (``L.B.''), 96, of 1472 Skyview Dr., Salem, formerly of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Sunday at Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center in Salem. He was born September 18, 1900 in Rowan County to Charlie and Minni e Bost Karriker and was self-employed. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Winston-Salem, and was preceded in death by a son, L.B. Karriker Jr. He is survived by his wife, Virginia E. Karriker of 1472 Skyview Dr., Salem; three daughters, Mrs. Helen Rothrock of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mrs. Judy Hupp of Morehead City, N.C., and Mrs. Linda Myers of Clover, S.C.; two sons, Kermit Karriker of Lake Charles, La. and Charles Karriker of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.; eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, Winston-Salem. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. PLUNKETT, Hubbard Thomas Jr., Col. U.S. Army Ret., 75, of Roanoke, passed away early Monday morning, February 17, 1997 in a local hospital. He was a loving gentle man with a quick wit and concern for everyone. His life was an exciting and fascinating journey from the coal mining towns of West Virginia, where he was born on Christmas Day in 1921 to the far horizons of the world he lived life to the fullest in a constant quest for knowledge, honor, and achievement. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (He was a trumpet player with the Highty Tighties) with a degree in electrical engineering in 1942 at the ripe age of 20 years. He then earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Harvard in 1948, after having been selected the youngest officer in the Army to participate in a new advanced degree program. Japan then became his next duty assignment to serving as the Communications and Procurement Officer under General Douglas MacArthur as part of the General Headquarters Command for occupied Japan before and during the Korean Conflict. Many other interesting and varied duty assignments followed. He earned the Legion of Merit with an Oak Leaf Cluster among the many awards and citations he received while in the Army. He retired from the Army in 1972, and settled in Buena Vista where he became city manager for 2 years. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, the former Frances Vivian Kash of Lynchburg; twin daughters, Lynn Nilsson of Roanoke, Gay Jensen of Fort Worth, Texas and their husbands; four grandchildren, Heather Nilsson, Molly Nilsson, Katherine Jensen, and Robert Jensen; two sisters, Glenna Neeley, Dr. Jean Cavendar both of Charleston, W.Va.; brother, John ``Jack"" Plunkett of Bangkok, Thailand. At his request no memorial service is planned. The family will be receiving friends and relatives who wish to pay their last respects at the residence of his daughter, Lynn Nilsson, 310 Washington Ave., S.W., Roanoke between the hours of 7 and 9 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 1997. POPP, Stella Atkins, 79, of Pearisburg, died Sunday, February 16, 1997 in Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Popp was a member of the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church. She was born in Eckman, W. Va. on November 10, 1917, and was a daughter of the late Ernest and Mary Jane Wilson Atkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, George July Popp. She is survived by 4 sons and daughters-in-law, Clifford Popp, Pearisburg, George and Beth Popp, Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla., Jerry and Claudine Popp, Dublin, Harry and Caroline Popp, Manassas; 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Julia and Pete Hilton, Pembroke, Glenna Figgins, Pearisburg; Rinda and Wayne Sells, Holton, Mich.; 2 brothers, Charles Atkins, Pearisburg, Claude Atkins, Falmouth; 2 sisters, Annie Cartwright, Switchback, W. Va., Mary Bailey, Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 1 step-great-great-grandson. SINGLETON, Frances Darlene Boothe, 55, of Roanoke, formerly of Bluefield, Va., died Monday, February 17, 1997 in Roanoke. She was born in North Tazewell, Va. and was a daughter of James O. Boothe of Bland, Va. and the late Rosa Mitchell Boothe. She had done food service work in local schools and restaurant's. She was of Protestant faith. In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Estel Darnell Singleton Sr., Roanoke; sons, Estel D. Singleton Jr., James Michael Singleton, Roanoke; sister, Mattie Johnson, Laurel, Md.; grandchildren, Logan and Rachel Singleton; several aunts and uncles. ST.CLAIR, James P., 82, of Vinton, passed away Monday, February 17, 1997. He was a member of Colonial Baptist Church, Blue Ridge, and was retired as a field service engineer from Cummins Atlantic Inc. He was predeceased by his parents, James R. and Emma Adams St.Clair; a brother, Albert St. Clair. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth F. St.Clair; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Mary Ann St.Clair; three grandchildren, Brad, Alison, and Byron St.Clair, all of Vinton; a brother, Howard L. St.Clair, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 19, with the Rev. Garvin L. Dykes, Rev. John S. Dooley, and Rev. Aubrey N. Dooley officiating. STRALEY, Charles Goodloe, 80, of Christiansburg, died Monday, February 17, 1997, in the V.A. Medical Center, Salem. TALBERT, Emory Lane, 76, of Mechanicsburg, died Monday, February 17, 1997 in St. Lukes Hospital, Bluefield, W.Va. He was born on December 30, 1920 at White Gate the son of the late Ribble Ellic and Elizabeth Ann Lane Talbert. He is survived by his wife, Loraine Chewning Talbert, Mechanicsburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Janet Talbert, Craigsville; one brother, Paris W. Talbert Sr., White Gate; five sisters, Mrs. Martha Sheppard, Dublin, Mrs. Mary Sink, Mrs. Annie Sink, Mrs. Edith Nicewander and Mrs. Frances Stevens all of White Gate; special sister-in-law, Nellie Lou Pruett, Mechanicsburg; four grandchildren, Tonya Talbert, Melanie McGhee, Travis Talbert, and Todd Talbert; two stepgrandchildren, Ginger McClain and Timmy Kehrer. TAYLOR, Lena Pearl, 91, of Buena Vista, died Monday, February 17, 1997, in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Born April 17, 1905 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late James William and Annie Maddox Taylor. She was a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Lee Taylor. Surviving are two sons, Ch arles L. Taylor of Lexington, and Leonard W. Taylor of Buena Vista; two daughters, Joyce V. Gunther and Esther T. Tomlin, both of Buena Vista; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 1997, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chester Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Lomax Funeral Home.
