Phyllis Cothran resigned Wednesday as chief operating officer of Trigon Healthcare Inc., effective March 31.
Cothran, who joined the state's largest health insurer in 1972 and was appointed to her present position in 1990, made the announcement at the regularly scheduled meeting of Trigon's board.
She said she had recently celebrated her 25th anniversary with the company and her 50th birthday.
"Those two milestones prompted me to take a look at where I am and where I'm going," Cothran said. "With Trigon's successful conversion [to a for-profit stock company] and initial public [stock] offering now behind us, the time seems right for me to make a change.
Cothran said she expected "to start putting some balance back into my life," spending more time with her husband and stepsons and pursuing personal interests.
Chairman Norwood H. Davis Jr. will assume all direct operating responsibilities for the company. Trigon said it expected to fill the position at a later date.
Trigon, which has an office in Roanoke, provides insurance to nearly 1.9 million customers.
