FUNDS FOR FALLING BRANCH ACCESS ROAD OK'D

The Commonwealth Transportation Board approved $450,000 toward the $600,000 construction of an access road for Montgomery County's Falling Branch industrial park.

The decision came during a meeting Thursday in Richmond.

The as-yet-unbuilt 165-acre industrial park sits next to Interstate 81, beside Falling Branch Elementary School in an area recently added to Christiansburg's boundaries.

The road project would extend White Oak Lane by 0.7 mile, and end in a cul-de-sac inside the industrial park.

Montgomery County will pay the $150,000 difference between the state funds and the construction cost. The source of the county's contribution has yet to be determined, said Joe Gorman, Board of Supervisors chairman.

The eventual construction of an interchange between the new U.S. 460 bypass connector and I-81 will provide direct access to the park. Construction of the approximately $42 million Falling Branch Road interchange is to start in September and finish in 1999.

The access road will be 24 feet wide. Additional right of way will be acquired in anticipation of future development which may warrant the access road's expansion to four lanes.
