Ann Spencer, one of the most senior women on the business side of Virginia Tech's administration, is stepping down April 1.
"Ann has quietly grown into one of our most effective administrators over her 18 years with Virginia Tech," executive vice president Minnis Ridenour said in a statement.
"Through effective leadership, providing opportunities for good people, and plain old common sense, Ann has done a great job of managing her portfolio," Ridenour said.
Spencer, a Tech alumna, has served as associate vice president for administration and personnel since 1990. She previously worked as assistant vice president for administrative affairs, assistant vice president for finance, and a grants and contracts administrator.
She holds a bachelor of arts degree in accounting and a master of business administration from Tech.
Spencer says she's leaving for personal and health reasons. Two years ago, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and her husband, Blacksburg businessman Scott Roop, suffered a heart attack last year, according to a news release issued by the university.
"We have jointly assessed the way we are living within the context of the physical limitations that we each now have. We have come to realize that some changes are necessary," Spencer wrote in her resignation letter.
