PARKER, Ruth Hale, 69, of Christiansburg, died Friday, February 21, 1997, at Radford Community Hospital. She was born on February 19, 1928 in Blacksburg, to the late Phillip D. and Ruth Wilson Hale. She is survived by her husband, Willie A. Parker, Christiansburg; two daughters and a son-in-law, JoAnne and Chris Owens, Burke, and Donna Lee Smith, Irwin, Texas; five grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis Hale Tate, Blacksburg; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be c onducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, February 24, 1997, in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg, with the Rev. Herbert Hobbs officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.

ROBBINS, Rev. Dr. Wilmer Bradley, 83, of Radford, died Wednesday, February 19, 1997, at The Asbury Center at Birdmont in Wytheville. He was a retired United Methodist Minister, having served many churches in The Holston Conference for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, Louise C. Robbins, Radford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Phil and Patty Robbins, Big Stone Gap, and David and Susan Robbins of Richmond; one sister, Fern Robinson and her husband, Joe, of Jonesville; two brothers, Calvin Robbins, Dalton, Ga., and Coolidge Robbins, Arlington, Texas; six grandchildren, Andy and his wife, Misty, Wes, Brad, Leigh, Alex, and Ann Bradley Robbins. One great-granddaughter, Kelsey Robbins. Many nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, February 21, 1997, at the Grove United Methodist Church in Radford, with Rev. Clarence Dishman, Rev . Grady Winegar, and Rev. H. B. Hauk Jr. officiating. Committal services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at The Holston Conference Cemetery at Emory. ROWLAND, Jeffrey Arden, 39, of Roanoke, went to be with God on Friday, February 21,1997. Jeff was honorably discharged and medically retired from the U.S. Air Force, after serving unselfishly for 181/2 years at the rank of Master Sergeant. He was an active member and sponsor in A.A. for 8 1/2 years. He was the beloved husband of Rosslyn E. Bell, and is survived by his mother, Betty H. Rowland of Roanoke; a sister, Penny R. and husband, Lt. Col. (Ret.) John M. Stancil of Midwest City, Okla.; brothers, John F. and wife, Suzanne S. Rowland of Roanoke; Kenneth A. and wife, Margaret Rowland of Savannah, Ga., and Jack A. and wife, Theresa Rowland of Roanoke; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Reta and Roy Bell of Huntingdon, England; brothers-in-law, Robin Bell and wife, Dr. Shelley Kramer of Boston, Mass., and Richard and wife, Karin Bell of Huntingdon, England, plus many nieces and nephews. Jeff was the son of the late John A. Rowland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice or the American Cancer Society. SCOTT, Evelyn Quenelle, 82, of Knob Hill, Rocky Mount, passed away February 20, 1997. She was preceded in death by her father, Lucian Elmer Scott; and her mother, Serena Warren Scott; one brother, Walter Lee Scott; and six sisters, Minnie S. Whitlow, Blanche S. Painter, Dora S. Angle, Mary Gladys Scott, Vera S. Lindgren, and Bernice S. Flippo; one nephew, Robert Whitlow Jr.; and a niece, Peggy Wade Angle. She was a member of the Rocky Mount United Methodist Church, was a veteran of World War II and a retired school teacher of 40 years. Surviving are five nieces, Louise Painter Stultz, Lynchburg, Reese Whitlow Woody, Roanoke, Jean Flippo Williams, Radford, Betty Scott Snead, Greenville, Tenn., Mary Scott Miller, Johnson City, Tenn.; three nephews, Richard Scott Whitlow, Smith Mountain Lake, Col. Charles William Flippo, Claytor Lake, and Warren Peterson Lindgren, Odenton, Md.; one aunt, Mary Warren Stevens, Sydnorsville; 18 great, 26 great-great, 4 great-great-great-nieces and nephews. Her request was that her remains be donated to the Anatomical Division of the Virginia Department of Health to be used for scientific study teaching and research. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to the Rocky Mount United Methodist Church or the charity of one's choice. A memorial service will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Rocky Mount United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. J. Wesley Inge officiating. SMITH, Mary Leslie, 89, of Fincastle, died Thursday, February 20, 1997. She was a member of the Clifton Forge Moose Lodge Ladies Auxiliary #1683, and is survived by her husband, Paul R. Smith; two sisters, Ruby Ridenhour, Falls Church, Evelyn Redden, Nimitz, W. Va.; two brothers, Wesley E. Peters, Nimitz, W. Va., Clarence A. Peters, Pence Springs, W. Va. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday,. February 23, 1997 at the Rader Daleville Chapel, with the Rev. Robert L. Hutchins officiating. Interment will follow in the Daleville Cemetery. SPRADLIN, Molly Witt, 76, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, February 21, 1997. She was the widow of Harry W. Spradlin and was a retired Teacher from the Botetourt County School System with 37 years service and was a lifetime member of Glade Creek Lutheran Church. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Dedi S. and Bi lly K. Elliott, Roanoke; a son, Steven G. Spradlin, Roanoke; granddaughter, Julia Elliott; a nephew, Thomas M. Murray, Kingsport, Tenn. Funeral services will be conducted from the Glade Creek Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. Monday, February 24, 1997 with Pastor Robert J. Maier and Rev. Guy A. Ritter officiating. Burial will be in Glade Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Glade Creek Lutheran Church. STIGALL, Lois Fugate, 63, of Salem, passed away Thursday, February 20, 1997. She was an area resident for 20 years. She is survived by her husband, Coleman A. Stigall; sons, George E. Stigall and Coleman A. Stigall III of Richmond, and Robin E. Stigall and David F. Stigall of Salem; daughters, Dani L. Bates of Cocoa, Fla., Linda M. Stigall of Land-O-Lakes, Fla., and Laura S. Overstreet of Roanoke; her mother, Eva Fugate; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, and two sisters. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, February 24, at 2 p.m., at John M. Oakey and Son Chapel in Salem, with the Rev. Mark Graham officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 23, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
SWISHER, Harry Love, 73, of Lexington, died Thursday, February 20, 1997, in the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville. Mr. Swisher was born on August 6, 1923 in Rockbridge County, and was a son of the late John Henry Swisher and Bertha Wade Swisher. He was a retired equipment operator with the Virginia Department of Transportation, and was a member of the McElwee Chapel, Bustleburg, and the Fairfield Moose #2135. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wade Swisher. Mr. Swisher is survived by three brothers, R. Lewis Swisher, Brownsburg, Henry M. Swisher, Staunton, John W. Swisher, Brownsburg; four sisters, Mrs. Gene (Mildred) S. Ing, Annadale, Mrs. James (Emily) S. Tillery, Mrs. Donald (Ann) S. Beard, and Mrs. Bill (Jo) Heath, all of Brownsburg; and a special friend, Clarence (Red) Moore, Lexington. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 23, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Rev. Roy W. Swisher officiating, with burial to follow in the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, Lexington. THORNHILL, Paul Clifford, (``Dick''), 90, of Pearisburg, died in Blacksburg Thursday, February 20, 1997, following a long illness. Born in Giles County on July 31, 1906, he was a son of the late Robert Kipper and Frances Comer Thornhill. Dick was a retired employee of the Hoechst-Celanese Plant in Giles County, a member of Angels Rest I00F Lodge No. 153, and attended Victory Holiness Church in Pearisburg, and Evangelistic Holiness Chapel in Pembroke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Perkins Thornhill; a daughter, Frances T. Stout; and two sons-in-law, Willie Stout and Buzzy Suttle. Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Paul E. and Becky H. Thornhill of Pembroke, Chester and Frances M. Thornhill of Pembroke, Roy and Shirley Thornhill of Pearisburg, and Gary and Linda Thornhill of Pearisburg; three daughters and sons-in-law, Gladys and Jimmy Anderson of Blacksburg, Leatha and Donald Jones of Pembroke, and Ann T. Suttle of Pembroke; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two dear and caring friends, Elain Batten and Julie Ward of Blacksburg. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke with the Rev. E. H. Shaver and the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. VAUGHAN, Virginia Holliday, 83, of 224 Lake Street, Pulaski, died Friday, February 21, 1997, in Columbia Pulaski Community Hospital. Born on August 17, 1913, in Wythe County, she was the daughter of the late Maurice Holliday and Clara Jones Holliday. She wor ked at Tyler Drug Company for many years. She is survived by her husband, Everett Wooling Vaughan; two sisters, Mrs. Layne (Ellen) French and Mrs. Edith H. Hall of Pulaski; one stepson, Daryle D. Vaughan of Alexandria; one stepdaughter, Violet V. Napier of Fredericksburg; five stepgrandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren, and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from First Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. C. R. Conner and the Rev. Jim Grubb officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 p.m. at Thomas M. Seagle and Sons Funeral Home.
WALKE, Dr. John Tabb, 80, of Roanoke, died Friday, February 21, 1997, at his home. He was born June 15, 1916 in Richmond. Dr. Walke graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond. He graduated from the University of Richmond with a Bachelor of Science degree. Dr. Walke received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, and did his internship at Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Medical Corps of the United States Army. He was awarded the Soldiers Medal in service. He did his residency in pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Walke served on the staffs of Lewis-Gale Hospital, Community Hospital, Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and Burrell Memorial Hospital. He served as President of the Virginia Pediatric Society. Dr. Walke was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Virginia Society of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of Virginia, and the Roanoke Academy of Medicine. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Sons of the American Revolution, The Virginia Society of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America, the Jamestown Society, the American Orchid Society, the Blue Ridge Orchid Society, the Virginia Native Plant Society, the Blue Ridge Wildflower Society, Virginia Society of Ornithology, Roanoke Valley Bird Club, The Retired Officers Association, a member of the Friends of the Arboretum at Virginia Western Community College, and a member of Woodpecker Ridge. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Murrell Walke; one daughter, Carolyn Walke Gard and husband, Albert III; one son, John Wistar Walke and his wife, Janice; seven grandchildren, Robert, Aaron, and John Gard, Sara, Amy, Jason and Bryan Walke. There will be a private graveside service for the family. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Deborah Hunley officiating. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, or your favorite charity. WELCH, L. Ray, Sr., 83, formerly of Roanoke, most recently of Salem, passed away, Friday, February 21, 1997 in a Salem hospital. He was retired after 30 years service as a Chief Clerk for the Norfolk and Western Railway. Mr. Welch was a member of Saint Mark's Lutheran Church, the Mens Bible Class there, and a Scout Master of Troop #25 BSA for some twenty seven years. He also held membership in Williamson Road Lodge #163 AF & AM, the Kazim Temple of the Shrine, and the Carrie Lee OES #108. He was predeceased by a grandson, Joseph W. Gilbert. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Martha Black Welch; two sons and daughters-in-law, L. Ray Welch Jr. and Betsy Welch, Winston Salem, N.C., David L. Welch and Sherry Welch, Swansea, Illinois; a daughter and son-in-law, Martha W. Gilbert and James Gilbert, Covington; five grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two brothers, Fred Welch, Salt Lake City, Utah, John Welch, Lansing, N.C.; two sisters, Ruth Ham, North Wilksboro, N.C. and Grace Blanton, Shelby, N.C. WOOLWINE, Carliss E., 61, of Christiansburg, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 21, 1997, from Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem. He is survived by his wife, Mary M. Woolwine; two sons, Carliss E. Woolwine Jr. of Christiansburg and Ronald E. Woolwine of Radford; three daughters, Teresa Dove and Lisa Woolwine of Blacksburg and Angela Cumbee of Riner; seven grandchildren; four brothers, Jay Woolwine and Randy Woolwine of Christiansburg, and Mark Woolwine and Dennis Woolwine of Blacksburg; one sister, Rita Kytchen of Blacksburg; a special brother-in-law, Wendell Proco and wife, Joy, and special friends, Alva and Barbara Perdue, Walter Maloney, and Gerald and Pat Lovern.
