BROWN, Walker, 73, of Roanoke, departed this life on Sunday, February 23, 1997, in the VA Medical Center, Salem. He was born in Galax on January 22, 1925. He was the son of the late Clarence and Laura Brown. He served in the United States Navy in World War II, and was retired from Valleydale Meats in Salem. He belonged to Metropolitan Baptist Church and was a faithful member until his illness. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Laura Saunders, Charlotte, N.C., Mrs. Regina Gravely, Roanoke, Mrs. Eunice Jones, Salem; two sons, Walker Brown Jr., Roanoke, Larry Brown, Roanoke; two sons-in-law, James Saunders, Charlotte, N.C., Richard Jones, Salem; two daughters-in-law, Vanessa Brown, Roanoke, Michelle Brown, Roanoke; one sister, Esther Gwynn, Brooklyn, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and friends; a special friend, Paul Hampton, Portsmouth. He was a loving father and grandfather, a friend to all with whom he came in contact with. To know him was to love him. Funeral services will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at the Shiloh Baptist Church, Salem. Rev. Adrian Dowell will officiate, assisted by Rev. Winston Leonard. The interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.

CALDWELL, Ruby Rickman, 61, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, February 23, 1997. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie R. and Mary Lizzie Markham R ickman; and a sister, Martha C. Rudd; brothers, Floyd Rickman, Cecil Rickman and Robert Rickman. She is survived by her husband, Lester Ray Caldwell, Sr.; daughters and spouses, Katherine Caldwell and Terry, Roanoke, Ellen and Ronnie Hayslett, Vinton, Elizabeth and Algie Ashby, Roanoke; four sons and spouses, Lester R. Caldwell, Jr., Michael and Lori Caldwell, Roanoke, Clayton R. Caldwell, Ohio, Kevin E. Caldwell, Roanoke; sisters, Mary Eubanks, Helen Seward, Rachel Wilson; brothers, Charles Rickman, Jessie Rickman; a lifetime friend, Barbara Maddy Shivley; also surviving are 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. GARRETT, Alex Newton Jr., (``Newt''), 87, of 1205 Grace Ave., Clifton Forge, died Monday, February 24, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Beaverdam on December 15, 1909, son of the late Alex Newton and Lottie Mae Morrison Garrett. He was a retired Assistant Superintendent of Transportation for the CSX Transportation, and a retired real estate agent in Ormond Beach, Fla. He was a member of the Clifton Forge Presbyterian Church, life member, Ormond Beach Elks Lodge #2193, past member of Tomoka Oaks Golf and Country Club, Ormond Beach, and a member of the Cliftondale Country Club, Clifton Forge. He is survived by his wife, Pauline Hunter Garrett of Clifton Forge; a daughter, Jacqueline Critzer of Roanoke; a sister, Evelyn ``Lovey'' Goodbar of Clifton Forge; two brothers, Carl M. Garrett of Clifton Forge and Harry Garrett of Hinton, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Shereen C. Merricks of Roanoke, Cynthia C. Verhoven of Yorktown, Denise C. Schuh of Dover, Del.; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, James Walter ``Buddy'' Garrett; a brother, James Earl Garrett; two sisters, Bertha Farrell and Thelma ``Dovey'' Saville. Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, 11 a.m., from the Alleghany Memorial Park with Dr. William O. Moore officiating, assisted by Mr. Ronnie Saville. MAZEY, Capt. Paul L., (USAF Res. Retired) 76 of White Sulphur Springs died Sunday, February 23, 1997 in Berkshire Nursing Home, Vinton, Virginia. He was born June 2, 1920 in Cincinnati, Ohio, a son of the late Zoltan and Lucille Brooks Moore Mazey. He was an active member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church, White Sulphur Springs, served in World War II and was a P.O.W. in Germany for 16 months and was awarded the Air Medal, Commendation Ribbon and a Purple Heart. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 4482 in White Sulphur Springs and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he served as Assistant Postmaster in White Sulphur Springs. He was preceded in death by one son, Leslie Mazey. He is survived by his wife, Martha Guyer Mazey, at home; two sons, Paul L. (Lanse) Mazey, Roanoke, Virginia and Larry C. Mazey, Lewisburg, W.Va.; one daughter, Leah L. Loving, Lewisburg, W.Va.; one sister, Judy Edwards, Baltimore, MD.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, 1997 in the First Presbyterian Church, White Sulphur Springs with the Rev. Ben Gurley officiating. PARSONS, Bural W., (``Bill""), 81, of Volney, passed away Sunday, February 23, 1997 at his residence. Born November 6, 1915, at Volney, Va., to Jess J. and Mary Wells Parsons. He was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran having received the Purple Heart. SHUPE, James Kyle, 80, of Fries, died Sunday, February 23, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was the son of the late Orville and Lizzie Byrd Shupe. He was a member of Dixie Masonic Lodge #202 AF & AM, and a member of the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Jones Shupe, and is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry Sr. and Susan Shupe of Wytheville; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Roger Atkins of Roanoke; sister, Virginia Martin of Fries; brothers, Clarence Shupe and Dewey Shupe, both of Fries; four grandchildren and spouses, Larry Jr. and Heidi Shupe of Wytheville, Vonda and David Hutchison of Christiansburg, Valarie and Mark Williams of Rural Retreat, Michael Atkins of Blacksburg; three great-grandchildren, Joshua Shupe, Kayla Williams, Bolton Hutchison. STRICKLER, Doris Catherine, 83, of Rocky Mount, died Sunday, February 23, 1997 in the local hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Corbin S. Strickler, her parents, Dallas and Connie Blizzard, and her sister and brother-in-law, Forrest and Roy Richardson. Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Rosemary Strickler, Jack and Faye Strickler, Danny and Carolyn Strickler, all of Rocky Mount; four grandchildren, Cathy Solomon, Tony Strickler, Robin Babb, Keith Strickler; three stepgrandchildren, Linda Pendleton, Robert Webster, Donna Rodriquez; eleven great-grandchildren; one great great-grandson; five sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; four nephews and their families; also surviving are two very special friends, Libby Emler, Dorothy Smith. WHITE, Madeline Miles, of Roanoke, and formerly of Richmond, died Monday afternoon, February 24, 1997. She was the widow of Willard H. White, and the daughter of the late Clarence E. and Myrtle M. Miles. Mrs. White was a member of First Presbyterian Church, and is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marrion W. and the Rev. Rockwell P. Ward, Boone, N. C.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday from Evergreen Burial Park, with a memorial service following at 2 p.m. Thursday from First Presbyterian Church, with Dr. W.
