IN SERVICE SOUTH

MAJ. JOHN A. PILCHER, son of John and Rebecca Pilcher of Roanoke, recently received the Air Force Achievement Medal for his outstanding service while on a humanitarian mission to Manta, Ecuador.

Pilcher is a medical team member from Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. In Ecuador, the medical teams assisted in the care of more than 60 Ecuadorians who were severely burned when an American civilian cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Manta.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT BELINDA H. SMITH, daughter of Gary W. Smith of Buchanan and Janice S. Peters of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Great Lakes, Ill.

Smith is a 1992 graduate of James River High School.

LT. LEE MESSIMER, son of Harry Messimer of Salem and Melvenia Messimer of Roanoke, was recently promoted to his present rank in the Navy Reserve.

Messimer is a 1983 graduate of Northside High School.

PFC. JAMIE W. KOCH, son of Shelby J. and Robert M. St.Clair, has received the Army Achievement Medal. The medal is awarded for meritorious service, acts of courage or other outstanding accomplishments.

Koch is a heavy wheel vehicle mechanic with the 503rd Maintenance Company at Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, N.C.

MARINE CPL. WILLIAM H. PARR, son of Duane D. and Nancy J. Parr of Roanoke, recently returned from a five-month deployment to South America aboard the U.S. Navy amphibious ship USS La Moure County.

Parr is a 1993 graduate of Northside High School.

AIR FORCE AIRMEN MATTHEW E. LIGHT, LASHONDA N. ZACHERY, RICHARD D. MILLER II, MARK A. SOWDER and AIR FORCE AIRMAN 1ST CLASS LEO-FRANDUAH Y. LARKPOR recently completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Light, son of Jerry and Deliegh Light of Salem, is a 1987 graduate of Salem High School.

Zachery, daughter of Jackie Clewis of Roanoke, and Larkpor, son of Brenda D. and Charlie E. Thomas Sr. of Roanoke, are 1996 graduates of William Fleming High School.

Miller, son of Richard Miller of Morrisvale, W.Va., and Darlene Collins of Roanoke, is a 1996 graduate of Scott High School, Madison, W.Va.

Sowder, son of Wayne and Sandy Weiser of Roanoke, is a 1996 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

PFC. JOSHUA T. PERRINGTON, son of Debbie Sherman of Roanoke, recently was promoted to his present rank while serving with Marine Aviation Training Support Group, Naval Technical Training Center, Meridian, Miss.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT BRANDON J. SIMPSON, son of Larry and Thelma Simpson of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Simpson is a 1996 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

SEAMAN RECRUIT BRIAN J. LUZIER and SEAMAN RECRUIT CORY M. WILLIAMS, both of Roanoke, recently graduated from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Luzier, a 1992 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, is the son of Connie Charlton.

Williams, a 1996 graduate of William Fleming High School, is the son of Robin Webb.

SGT. DANNY R. CAMDEN, son of Linda Camden of Roanoke, has received the Army Achievement Medal for his service as a parachute rigger with the 600th Quartermaster at Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, N.C.

Camden is a 1986 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

ARMY PVT. NICHOLAS J. CURRIER, son of Kenneth and Chinae Currier of Roanoke, recently has completed basic training at Fort Knox, Ky.

Currier is a 1996 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

LANCE CPL. MARQUETTE E. POSTON, son of Jones Poston II of Roanoke, was promoted to his present rank while serving with Marine Helicopter Training Squadron 204, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C.

Poston was a 1992 graduate of William Fleming High School.

AIR FORCE STAFF SGT. APRIL M. KRAUTH, daughter of James Preston III of Roanoke and Carol Hunt of Grafton, W.Va., participated as a member of the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee for the 53rd Presidential Inauguration.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS CATHERINE E. GOTT, daughter of Jane Gott of Roanoke, recently was selected as Supervisor of the Quarter at Naval Air Station, Lemoore, Calif.

STAFF SGT. BRYAN S. CARKIN, son of Loretta Semones of Roanoke, recently received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal for honest and faithful service.

Carkin, a 1977 graduate of Andrew Lewis High School, is currently stationed at Marine Corps Recruiting Station, Milwaukee.
