Library offers genealogy classes

The Roanoke Public Library is offering a series of genealogy classes for those interested in learning ancestral research. The five-session course will be held on April 6, 13, 20 and 27 and May 4, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Classes will be held in the Virginia Room of the main library, 706 S. Jefferson St., taught by Jimmie Steele.

SAT preparatory course offered

The Roanoke City Public Schools Guidance Services Department is offering a Scholastic Assessment Test preparatory course for those who are planning to take the May or June examination.

Six, four-hour sessions will be held each Saturday, March 8 through April 19, at the CITY school, 107 Church Ave. S.W.

Salem rec sports sign-ups to be held

The Salem Parks and Recreation Department will hold Dixie League baseball and softball registration at the James Moyer Sports Complex on Saturday and March 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Salem boys ages 6 to 14 (as of Aug. 1) and Salem girls ages 6 to 15 (as of June 1) are eligible to participate. Parents and guardians are asked to bring proof of their child's age.

Registration for Dixie Debs (girls ages 16 to 18) and Dixie Pre-Majors (boys ages 15 to 16) will be held at a later date. For more information, contact Rudy Hann or Dan Jones at 375-4021.

Head Start recruits for fall programs

Head Start, a comprehensive developmental children's program with centers in Roanoke and Salem, is recruiting for fall enrollment in the part-day and full-day programs.

Head Start is free for families who meet eligibility requirements.

Adoption service holds April program

ABC Adoption Services Inc., a nonprofit agency licensed in Virginia, is placing children from Russia, Eastern Europe, China, Vietnam and Central and South America with American families with a wait of less than a year.

Those interested in adopting must complete a parent preparation/home-study session in April.

Wildlife, garden damage discussed

Jim Parkhurst, Extension wildlife specialist at Virginia Tech, will present a free program, ``Managing Wildlife Damage in the Garden, Lawn, or Landscape,'' March 12 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Board of Supervisors meeting room of the Roanoke County Administration Center, 5204 Bernard Drive.

Cave Spring students present play

The Cave Spring High School drama club will present ``Juliet and Romeo'' Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium.

The play, written by Wayne Anthoney and directed by Elizabeth Griffin, is a parody of the Shakespearean tragedy ``Romeo and Juliet.''

Tickets, available at the door, are $3 for adults, and $2 for students, senior citizens and children 12 years old and under.

Formal occasion dress sale

The After Prom Committee of Northside, William Byrd and Glenvar high schools will hold the annual Second Time Around formal occasion dress sale March 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Crossroads Mall.

There is a $5 nonrefundable entry fee for each dress or tuxedo placed in the sale. The seller sets the dress price, and keeps all money from the sale.

Apparel will be accepted March 6 and 7 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Money and unsold dresses must be picked up March 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. Unclaimed items will be donated to charity.

The snow date is March 15.

Organists guild offers scholarship

The Roanoke Chapter of the American Guild of Organists offers a scholarship each year to students in grades nine to 12 to study organ.
