VMI'S MICKIEWICZ HONORED BY SC

VMI's Adam Mickiewicz was named the Southern Conference's outstanding wrestler Friday at the league's awards banquet in Greensboro, N.C.

In addition to Mickiewicz at 134 pounds, four other Keydets made the all-conference team: Jarrod Fitzgerald (142 pounds), Jason Foresman (150), Isaac Moore (190) and Lesley Apedoe (heavyweight).

* Five Carter Center Aquatics athletes won their events on the first day of the Virginia Swimming A/BB Championships at the Dedmon Center pool in Radford.

In the boys' 15- to 18-year-old division, Adam Baber won the 200-meter freestyle, Jonas Baranauskas the 200 individual medley and Paul Hartman the 1,000 freestyle. In the girls' 15-18 division, Lana Thompson won the 100 butterfly. In the girls' 13-14 division, Jamie Trivett finished first in the 100 breast stroke.

The Marlins were second to Quantico in the team standings.

* Virginia Tech is ninth after the first day of the Matlock Collegiate Classic golf tournament in Lakeland, Fla. Augusta State shot a 5-under par aggregate of 283 to take a four-shot lead over the 18-team field.

The Hokies shot 293, with freshman Brad Hyler leading the way. He fired a 2-under 70 and is fifth individually.

* Roanoke Express backup goaltender Larry Moberg, who posted a 2-5 record this season in 13 games, has retired. Rob Charlier was signed to replace Moberg on the Express roster.

* South Florida defeated Virginia Tech 7-2 in a baseball game in Tampa, Fla. Chad Foutz (Franklin County) and Kris Turberville drove in the runs for the Hokies (2-1).
