The Roanoke Express suffered its fourth setback in its last six games with an 8-1 drubbing at the hands of the South Carolina Stingrays on Friday night in an East Coast Hockey League game.
Jason Hehr paced the East Division-leading Stingrays (35-12-8) with a hat trick while the league's leading scorer, Ed Courtenay, tallied three assists in the victory. South Carolina goaltender Taras Lendzlick registered a near-perfect performance, stopping 26 of 27 Roanoke shots.
South Carolina built a 2-0 lead 2:58 into the first period. The Express (30-21-4) cut the deficit to 2-1 at 12:35 of the period on center Wayne Strachan's 16th goal of the season. Strachan's tally was set up by Matt O'Dette and Jeff Jablonski.
The Stingrays scored their third goal of the opening period on the man advantage when a shot deflected off an Express player and slid past goalie Dave Gagnon.
