ADKINS, W. Davis Sr., 75, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 4, 1997. He was a loving and caring husband, daddy, grandfather and brother. Mr. Adkins proudly served in the U.S. Army as a Medic during World War II, and worked in the wholesale jewelry and watch parts business in Roanoke for over 40 years. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth S. (``Libby"") Adkins; two daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and Glenn Reedy, and Vicki and Mike Stinnette, and a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Cathy Adkins, all of Roanoke; sisters and brother-in-law, A. Frances Adkins of Vinton, and Elizabeth and B. C. Stout of Roanoke; grandchildren, Michelle Hanna, Stacie Reedy, Christopher Reedy, Shannon and Chuckie L. Harmon, Lindsey Adkins and Ross Adkins; one great-grandchild, Alison Nicole Harmon, all of Roanoke; a special relative, Mellie Maben of Roanoke; and many nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 1997, at Oakey's North Chapel, with the Rev. Sam Crews officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Vinton. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's North Chapel. The family wishes to thank the staff on the 10th floor of Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their care, kindness and efforts during Mr. Adkins' recent hospitalization.

AUSTIN, Berkley A., 82, of Boones Mill, passed away Monday, March 3, 1997. Mr. Austin was retired from Red Line Trucking Company. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Beckner Austin; sons and wives, Thomas and Shirley Austin, Florida, Richard and Dianne Austin, Howard and Kathy Austin, Boones Mill, John Austin, Elliston and his fiancee, Brenda Burris; four sisters, Ma rtha Roope and Joyce Hale, Rocky Mount, Virginia Roope, Richmond, Oakey Johnson, Evington; also surviving are 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild. BRYANT, Rachel E., 78, of Roanoke, died Monday, March 3, 1997. She was the widow of Thomas H. Bryant. Surviving are a niece and nephew, Donna and Gerald Jirousek; a great-niece, Lisa Michele Jirousek; an aunt, Lala Jordan, and numerous cousins. CROUCH, Johnnie Ellis, 85, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, March 3, 1997. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Crouch and was retired from the N & W Railway after 48 years of service. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, James L. and Zennia Crouch, Roanoke, Wayne Ellis and Polly Ann Crouch, Virginia Beach, Va.; four grandch ildren, Jeffrey Crouch and wife, Judy, Oriskany, Va., Chris Crouch and Kim, MeBane, N.C., Missey and Dicky Van Syckle, Chesterfield, Va., Cherie and Tommy Nuchols, Richmond; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. CUNNINGHAM, Robert E., 76, of Raleigh, N.C., died Monday, March 3, 1997, in Raleigh. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Mitchell Family Cemetery in Sontag, with Dr. Joe Bryant officiating. DUDLEY, Emmett Marshall, 73, of Lynchburg, passed away Monday, March 3, 1997. Born December 30, 1923, he was a son of the late Mack Mahlon and Pearl Cundiff Dudley. Surviving are one daughter, Susan Peak of Eden, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Pattie Dudley of Lynchburg; two sisters, Marjorie Scott of Collinsville, Kathleen Hogan of Java; one brother, Al Dudley of Smith Mountain Lake; four grandchildren, Robert Peak, Candon Knowles, Courtney and Carly Sullivan; one great-grandchild, Bryce Knowles. EAKIN, John Foster, Sr., 69, of Daleville passed away Tuesday, March 4, 1997 at Burrell Nursing Center. He was a longtime member of Villa Heights Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher, devoted Choir Member and faithful servant in numerous other aspects of the church. He was a member of Boone Masonic Lodge #247 A F & A M, where he served as Worshipful Master. He was an honorary member of Pleasants Lodge #63 A F & A M, a member of Murray Royal Arch Chapter #22, and a member of Bayard Commandery #15. John was known for his original narration of the ""Trail of Jesus"". He was also an active volunteer and donor with the American Red Cross. He retired as Judge of the Botetourt County General District Court and Craig County General District Court. He was a graduate of the University of Baltimore School of Law, where he received a Juris Doctorate. Surviving are his wife, Anne Burruss Eakin; daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Mike Williams, Roanoke; son, John Eakin Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Sammy Minter, Daleville; grandson, Brian Williams, Roanoke; granddaughter, Lesley Anne Williams, Roanoke; brother, James Eakin, Indianapolis, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 7, 1997 at Villa Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. J. Donald Earwood Jr. officiating. FLETCHER, Joyce Robertson, 65, of Salem, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital. Mrs. Fletcher was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Robertson Sr. Surviving are her husband, James Buford Fletcher; brother, A. James and wife, Virginia, Robertson, Roanoke; two sisters, Louise Porterfield and Ruth Leonard of Roanoke; several nieces, nephews, and special friends. GUNN, Carol L., 27, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, March 3, 1997. She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Hale, and her husband, Anthony Gunn. Survivors include her father, James A. Poindexter; a son, James Hale, and her paternal grandmother, Maggie Poindexter, all of Roanoke; three brothers, David Hale of York, Pa., Donnie Hale of Lynchburg and Tony Hale of Roanoke; aunts, Scottie (Paul) Reeves, Edith (Preston) Thompson, Edith Jones and Wanda Hughes of Roanoke, Linda Musa of Pasadena, Md., and Margaret Ashley of Apopka, Fla.; uncles, James (Nira) Edwards, Edward, Richard, Andrew and Ellis Poindexter, all of Roanoke; mother-in-law, Sylvia Gunn; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives, and friends. HOPKINS, Robert Lee, 68, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, March 2, 1997 in a local hospital. He was a retired administrator with the Roanoke City School System. Surviving are his wife, Yvonne Page Hopkins; his son, Michael L. Hopkins of Burlington, N.C.; brother, Willie (Elaine) Hopkins of Greenville, N.C.; sister, Mrs. Mary H. MITCHELL, William Blair, 96, of Roanoke, died Monday, March 3, 1997. Widower of Eleanor McCormick Mitchell, Mr. Mitchell was a former furniture manufacturer's representative and director of The Lane Company, Inc. of Altavista. He was for many years a member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and President of the John Knox Men's Bible Class. He was a member of the Fincastle Resolutions Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Virginia Tech Hokie Club, the Elks Club, the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, the Roanoke Valley Historical Society, and a life member of Optimist International. He was a principal benefactor of For All Seasons, Inc. in Easton, Md. He was a supporter of the Roanoke Museum of Fine Arts, and the Roanoke Valley Science Museum. Surviving Mr. Mitchell are two daughters, June M. Pankey of Richmond, and Joyce M. Price of Placitas, N.M.; five grandchildren, Kenneth G. Pankey Jr., Eleanor Pankey Meyer, Katherine Pankey, Julie Price, and Riley Blair Price; four great-grandchildren; one niece; three nephews; one great-nephew; and four great-nieces. MOSES, Gladys Jenett Webber, 92, of Newport News, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997. A native of Blue Ridge in Bedford County, she had been a Peninsula resid ent since 1941. Mrs. Moses was a homemaker. She was a member of Parkview Baptist Church, where she formerly taught Sunday School and served as al nursery worker. Mrs. Moses was the widow of Maynard E. Moses. She is survived by two daughters, Doris Marie Babcock of Norfolk and Ruby Lee Gagnon of Westfield, Mass; three sisters, Ruth Webber Gross of Blue Ridge, Cora Webber Hines of Newport News, and Dorothy Webber Jennings of Roanoke; her brother, Lawrence Webber of Vinton; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. ROBBINS, Virginia Campbell, 89, of Roanoke passed away Monday, March 3, 1997 in a Vinton Healthcare Center. She was the widow of Carl Y. Robbins. Mrs. Robbins was a member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church for 49 years and a member of the Mizpah Sunday School Class. She was a former employee of Smartwear Irving Saks and Lazarus. She was predeceased by a grandson, Randy Harrison. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Carl Dane Robbins and Bonnie H. Robbins, Pawley's Island, S.C.; daughters and son-in-law, Martha and Howard Harrison, Blue Ridge, Mary K. Argabright, Quinton; a sister, Mrs. C. C. ROGERS, Lola H., 77, of Claypool Hill, died Monday afternoon, March 3, 1997, in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Cashiers, N.C., and was a daughter of the late George and Hattie Buchanan Hedden, both North Carolina natives. She had made her home in the Claypool Hill area for the past 45 years and was a member of Cedar Bluff Chapter #158, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church in Cedar Bluff. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Arthur C. Rogers; one grandson, David A. Gardner, and five brothers. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Cecilia Rogers Aron of Union Hall and Mrs. Rebecca R. Gardner of Roanoke; one son, Mr. Arthur Odell Rogers of Paintsville, Ky.; one brother, Mr. J. Quinton Hedden of Cashiers, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Arthur O. Rogers II, Terri B. Lahlou, Ann G. Dye, James B. (``Sandy"") Rogers, William D. Buckles, James D. Gardner and Shannon C. Rogers, and one great-grandson, Christopher R. Dye. Funeral services for Mrs. Lola H. SHEPHERD, Frances Mullins, 85, of Vinton, passed away Monday, March 3, 1997 at a local hospital. She was born July 27, 1911 in Vinton and was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harold L. Shepherd. She was a longtime and faithful member of the Vinton Baptist Church, serving through the years as a Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Women's Missionary Society. Surviving are 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Aileen and David McLeod, Vinton, Jean and Otto Counts, Jamestown, N.C.; two grandchildren, Melody McLeod and finance', Miguel A. Villarini, Roanoke, David B. McLeod and wife, Mytra, Albany, Ga.; great-grandson, David B. McLeod Jr., Albany, Ga.; three sisters, Evelyn Scott, Ethel Shepherd, both of Roanoke, Ruby Price, Houston, Texas; also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. SILER, Elaine June, 67, of Roanoke, native of Massachusetts, went to be with the Lord March 3, 1997. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Lisa Marie Hartsook. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had a special love for children and animals. She was very active in the PTA, church nursery and babysitting. She is survived by her husband, Horace J. Siler; three daughters and son-in-law, Sharon Hoke, Cindy Clark, Debbie and Bill Dalton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Brenda Siler, all of Roanoke, William and Patricia Siler, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Kimberly Flowers, Jimmy Clark, Jr., Matthew Hartsook, Mark Hartsook and wife, Crisma, Michael Hoke and Eric Howard; a number of stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; Kristen and Little Willie; best friend and neighbor, June Blankenship; two sisters, Dorothy Brigham, California, Esther McRobert, Massachusetts; one brother, Sonny Hoey, Massachusetts. STUART, Alfreda Saunders, 77, of Roanoke, passed away at her residence on Monday, March 3,1997. She is survived by her husband, Everett Stuart of Roanoke; four children, three daughters and a son, Freddi Monk and Beverly Kasey, both of Roanoke, Pamela Wilmont and Everette Stuart, both of Conneticut; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her devoted cousins, Dallas Fitzgerald and Evelyn Perdue, both of Roanoke; and a host of other relatives and friends. TAYLOR, Carl Chase, 75, of Lexington, died Monday, March 3, 1997, in the VA Medical Center, Salem. Mr. Taylor was born in Sinks Grove, W.Va. on February 17, 1922, and was a son of the late Lawrence Elmer Taylor and Eula Mae Brooks Taylor. He was a member of the V.F.W. #1499. He served in World War II with the 9th Armored Tank Division, was a P.O.W. for 48 days, was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Lauderdale A.R.P. Church, Lexington, and was a retired supervisor with Columbia Gas Transmission. He was preceded in death by a brother, Calvin Elmer Taylor. Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Gracie Mae Taylor, Lexington; one son, James C. Taylor, Lexington; two daughters, Linda T. Rhodenizer, Fairfield, Phyllis T. Arthur, Goode; two brothers, Clyde Taylor, Ronceverte, W.Va., Clayton Taylor, Covington; four sisters, Christine Deaver, Virginia Boone, both of Ronceverte, W.Va., Charlotte Coonell, Lewisburg, W.Va., Mabel Taylor, Fairlea, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 6, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Harrison Funeral Chapel with Rev. Zeb Carson Williams officiating . WELLS, Larry Wayne, (``Fargo""), 49, of Salem, went to be with the Lord Saturday, March 1, 1997. Funeral services 10 am. Wednesday from the Lotz Salem Chapel.

YEAGLEY, Linda Elaine, (``Lin""), 44, of Salem, died Sunday, March 2, 1997. She was born in King George, and was an area resident for the past 20 years. She was a rural route postal carrier, working out of the Cave Spring Post Office. She enjoyed the outdoors and her animals. Survivor s include her husband, Bill Yeagley; sons, Christopher J. Yeagley and Timothy J. Yeagley, both of Roanoke County; brothers, Raymond Owen of Richmond, and John and Robert Owen of King George, and her mother, Agnes Oakey of King George. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Salem, with the Rev. Ira Tolliver officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nature Conservancy, 1815 North Lynn Street, Arlington, Va. 22209.
