For some people, one stint at substitute teaching would be enough to convince them that the classroom was not for them. Not so for Amy McGee, a fifth-grade teacher at Roanoke's Garden City Elementary.
After years of teaching Bible school and Sunday school and baby-sitting, McGee took on a long-term substitute assignment, enabling her to get a foot in the door at a time when it was difficult to get a teaching job, she said. In retrospect, the experience was a positive one, she added.
"You really learn a lot as a substitute," she said. "That probably prepared me more for teaching than student teaching."
McGee has been a full-time teacher for 14 years and the classroom has not lost its appeal for her. McGee said she loves teaching fifth-graders because of their developing sense of humor and their openness to learning.
"Mrs. McGee is interesting and fun," said her nominator. "We do many fun things."
McGee, whose favorite subject to teach is science, is a Roanoke native who lives on a small dairy farm with her husband and two children. She enjoys reading, sewing, crafts and refinishing furniture.
