Man flees as witness approaches Hershberger Road cafeteria's back door during early-morning assault
A Roanoke cafeteria employee fought off an attacker as she arrived for work early Saturday.
The 41-year-old woman, whom police did not identify because the attack was a sexual assault, was confronted by a man as she walked to the rear of the cafeteria, in the 1600 block of Hershberger Road, at 3:46 a.m.
The man called to the woman and, after getting her attention, said he thought she was another woman. The man then pushed her against the building as she walked toward the back door, police said.
The woman tried to fight the man off with a mop handle she was carrying but he took it from her. The man told her he would knock her out and then punched her on the left side of her face. During a lengthy struggle that followed, the woman told police, the man grabbed at her breasts and she bit him in the neck.
The man fled toward Hershberger Road when another employee pulled into the parking lot.
No arrests had been made.
