Radford City Council on Monday approved recommendations for four new highway projects to be added to the city's transportation plan. The projects include:

A new city street, through vacant woodland, connecting Tyler Avenue (at Milton Lane) and Park Road (near the Rock Road intersection).

Second Avenue improvements from Lawrence Street to Park Road, to create a widened, two-lane road with left-turn lanes, four-foot-wide bicycle lanes and sidewalks on each side.

The Memorial Bridge replacement coordinated with a proposed Connellys Run Parkway. This would follow the existing Park Road, connecting Rock Road near the Sundell Drive intersection. At this point the parkway would continue north along Connellys Run to connect with First Street, near Grove Avenue. This project is considered key, and the city already owns two-thirds of the right of way required.

A connector road from Tyler Avenue to Peppers Ferry Road, providing a second New River bridge crossing and paving the way for a regional transportation corridor.

In subsequent action, council added the Connellys Run Parkway as a priority project to the city's current six-year plan for funding through the Virginia Department of Transportation. The Commonwealth Transportation Board holds its annual public hearing for allocation of 1997-98 Urban Funds and for updating localities' Six-Year Improvement plans today at the Salem Civic Center. Council's action came in time to be communicated to the board by City Engineer Jim Hurt.

The Montgomery County Public Service Authority approved an amended agreement with Carilion Radford Community Hospital Monday that would reimburse Carilion for extra costs associated with bringing water and sewer to the new hospital on Virginia 177 near Interstate 81.

The bids for water and sewer came in some $260,000 over engineering estimates made two years ago. The hospital offered to pay the additional cost if it could recoup the money through connection fees that will be paid by other customers and businesses as the Virginia 177 area develops. The contract originally allowed the hospital to recoup $300,000. The amended agreement reached Monday will allow it to recoup up to $562,850.

Upcoming:
