The Williamson Road Celtics knocked off the top-seeded North Roanoke Cavaliers 74-69 on Sunday to advance to the Junior League (age 13-15) semifinals of the 28th Annual Knights of Columbus Basketball Tournament.
The Celtics will face the North Roanoke Hokies Saturday. In the other semifinal, the Cave Spring Knicks will face the North Roanoke Magic.
In the Little League division (age 11-13), the top-seeded South Salem Smoking Flames cruised into the semifinals by beating the Cave Spring Raptors 42-31 and the Mount Pleasant Spurs 53-37. The Smoking Flames will face the Clifton Forge Mounties. In the other semifinal, the Blue Ridge Seminoles will face the Cave Spring Tigers.
The Cave Spring Blazers, the No. 1 seed in the Pee Wee/Midget League division (age 9-11), fell to the West Salem Cavaliers 24-20. The Cavaliers will face the Blue Ridge Wolverines. In the other semifinal, the North Roanoke Mavs will take on the Rockbridge Dream Team.
The Blue Ridge Wolverines recently claimed the Botetourt County Recreation League championship in the Pee Wee Division (age 9-10). The Wolverines defeated the Troutville Wildcats 33-26 to cap a 12-0 season. Blue Ridge team members are: Vincent Beall, Brian Blaylock, Micah Brown, Stephen Burke, Dustin Dean, James Jenkins, Chase Curtly, Matthew Shedder and Ben Smith.
Eleven-year-old Lauren Sisler was the all-around champion in the intermediate optional division at the March Madness Invitational March 8-9 at the Roanoke Academy of Gymnastics.
Sisler, who competes for the Roanoke Academy, qualified for the Region 7 competition May 23-25 in Philadelphia along with teammates Christine Diffell, Peggy Daffron, Amanda Heptinstall, Renee Booker and Julie Rhinesmith.
Roanoke's Kearstin Myers was the all-around champion in the developmental optional division at the competition, which featured 90 gymnasts from seven teams. Myers advances to the regionals along with teammates Jenna Watson, Megan Forbes Mackenzie Payne, Sarah Daffron, Elizabeth Longley, Colleen McCarthy, April Conner, Elizabeth Mulvaney, Elizabeth Mast and Emily Cribbs.
Other all-around winners were: Avlyn Austin (RAG), Level 6, Age 7-11; Emily Walters (RAG), Level 6, Age 12-14; Nancy Barr (RAG), Level 5, Age 7-8; Frances McCorkle (RAG), Level 5, Age 9-11; Megan Lewis (RAG), Level 5, 12-over; Christa Allred (Botetourt Gymnastics Academy), Level 4, Age 6-11; Melissa Broughman (BAG), Level 4, Age 9-11; April Brooks (BAG), Level 4, 12-over.
Laura Dichtel of the Carter Center Aquatics Marlins placed third in the girls 500-yard freestyle at the Virginia Swimming Senior Championships March 7-9 in Prince William County. Other Marlins who placed in the meet were: Jamie Trivett, sixth, girls 50-yard freestyle and eighth, 100-yard freestyle; Steve Cromer, fourth, boys 500-yard freestyle and fourth, 1000-yard breaststroke; Mandy Lippitt, seventh, girls 400-yard individual medley; and the relay team of Dichtel, Trivett, Lippitt and Blair Huffman, fourth, 800-yard freestyle,
Also, Marlins Cromer, Charlie Davies and Trent Johnson have qualified for the United States Swimming Junior Nationals March 18-22 in Orlando, Fla.
Carlie Smith had four goals for the Roanoke Star girls under-12 Star White team which won the Chesterfield Spring Tournament March 8-9 in Chesterfield. Stopper Ginny Moore led the defense, allowing just six shots on goal in four games. The Star White, which went 3-0-1 in the tournament, defeated the F.C. Richmond Mystic 1-0 in a shootout to earn the championship title.
