RUSSIANS COMING TO ROANOKE

Several Timesland basketball players will play against the Russian Junior National Team in games in Roanoke and Martinsville on April 1 and 2.

Virginia AAU and Virginia Amateur Sports, Inc., are producing ``Star City Hoops'' at Cave Spring High School and ``Martinsville Madness'' at Martinsville High School. A Virginia Select 17-and-under team will play the Russian Juniors at 8 p.m. April 1 at Cave Spring. The teams will play again at Martinsville at 8 p.m. April 2.

Local high school players on the 17-and-under team include Patrick Henry's Boo Battle, Floyd County's Travis Cantrell, Liberty's Raymond Arrington and Robert Carson and Blacksburg's Philip Klaus.

Both games will be preceded by 16-and-under girls' basketball games at 6 p.m. The Roanoke Stars will play the Martinsville/Piedmont Pride at Cave Spring, and Central Virginia AAU will take on the Pride at Martinsville.

Tickets are $4 and can be purchased at Leatherhaus at Tanglewood Mall and at Hazel's Restaurant in Martinsville. Tickets also will be available at the door.

BASEBALL

Salem begins exhibitions

The Salem Avalanche opens its spring training exhibition schedule today in Tucson, Ariz., against the California League's Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

The Avalanche will play a 12-game schedule before breaking camp March 31 and traveling to Salem. The Avalanche will open its 1997 regular season at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium on April 4 against the Durham Bulls.

Individual game tickets for the 1997 Avalanche season went on sale Monday at the Avalanche ticket office beside the baseball stadium.

W&L: Savannah College of Art & Design scored seven runs in the first inning and coasted to a 12-0 victory over Washington and Lee in Lexington. Ken Lesner hit a two-run homer for Savannah (11-7) and three pitchers held the Generals (4-9) to four hits.
