BARNHART, Merton W., 89, of Rocky Mount, died Monday, March 17, 1997 at the Veteran's Care Center. Mr. Barnhart was a son of the late G.A. and Zaida Peters Barnhart and was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Wray Barnhart. He was a life long resident of Franklin County and a member of Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren and was a local historian for the first half of the 20th Century. Mr. Barnhart was a veteran of World War II serving in Burma. A devoted husband and father, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Abraham and Edith Hunt Barnhart, Orlando, Fla., George David and Karen Barnhart, Rocky Mount; four grandchildren, Pamala Barnhart Kirk, Centreville, Va., David Barnhart, Rocky Mount, Kelly Marie Barnhart, Richmond, and Sonya K. Barnhart, Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; great-granddaughter, Monica Gayle Kirk; one sister, Mary Sue Flory, New Orleans, La. Funeral services will be conducted from Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren 11 a.m. Thursday with Pastor Bruce Huffman officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. CARDEN, Margaret Elizabeth, 50, of Radford, died Monday, March 17, 1997 in a Radford hospital. There are no immediate survivors. CARTLEDGE, George B., Sr., Chairman of the Board of Grand Piano and Furniture Company, died Sunday, March 16, 1997 at his home in Roanoke. He is survived by his wife, Olive M. Cartledge; his daughter, Patricia C. Bennett and her husband, Robert; his son, G eorge B. Cartledge Jr., and his wife, Mary Ann.; other survivors include his grandchildren, Debra B. Haggerty, Robert G. Bennett and wife, Betty, George B. Cartledge, III., and wife, Barbara, Ann P. Cartledge; and two great-grandchildren, Meredith P. Haggerty and George B. Cartledge, IV. He is also survived by his brother, Karl Cartledge; and his sister, Katherine C. Fallaw. CONNELLY, Elizabeth Turnbull, 95, of 1600 Westbrook Ave., Richmond, formerly of Lawrenceville, died Sunday, March 16, 1997. She was the widow of Henry Connelly, the daughter of Dr. Edward Randolph Turnbull and Mrs. Nannie Beaton Turnbull. A native of Lawrenceville, Va., Mrs. Connelly attended Lawrenceville schools and was a 1923 graduate of Randolph Macon Women's College, Lynchburg. She taught in the high schools of Lawrenceville and Williamsburg before joining the Science faculty of Randolph Macon Women's College, Lynchburg. After her marriage, she returned to Lawrenceville and worked with her husband in his law office. Mrs. Connelly was a member of the Brunswick Garden Club and the Fortnightly Bridge Club and was an early supporter of the Brunswick Historical Society. She was a lifetime member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Lawrenceville, where her ancestors had been members for generations. Mrs. Connelly is survived by a nephews, Dr. E. R. Turnbull , II, Laurel, Mississippi; a niece, Mrs. Albert Grobmeyer of Memphis, Tenn.; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Randolph B. Turnbull of Memphis, Tenn. and Miss Loula Connelly of Richmond. Mrs. Connelly's brother, Dr. Randolph B. Turnbull, predeceased her. CORVIN, Catherine Wertz, (``Wertie''), 94, of Roanoke, went to be with Jesus from her home on Saturday, March 15, 1997. She graduated from Roanoke Memorial School of Nursing in 1920, and was a member of the RMH Alumni. A former member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church and attended Women's Aglow. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond S. Corvin. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Cathi and Bryan (Wes) Dent; one brother, Dan M. Wertz; six grandchildren, Drew and Sherinda (Dolly) Thomson, Cathel (DeeDee) Lisi, and Bryan (BJ) Malia, and Corvin Dent; three great-grandchildren, Mikie and Noah Lisi, and Alona Thomson, all of Roanoke. FORRER, William H., 79, of Urbanna, died Monday, March 10, 1997. He was the loving husba nd of Phyllis ``Pete"" Forrer and was a member of Urbanna United Methodist Church, Central Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad and the Kiwanis Club of Middlesex. Other survivors include a sister, Margaret Darling of Center Harbor, N.H.; his three children, Jeanne Forrer McPherson of Mt. Ida, Ark., James Christian Forrer of Pensacola, Fla., and Patricia Callie Forrer of Richmond; his grandchildren, Adrienne Forrer, Erin Forrer, Allison Stevenson, Curry Forrer, and Zachary Norris; nieces and nephews, Susan and Warren Williams, John and Joan Forrer, David and Patsy Forrer, Gregg and Roger Colin, Steve and Kate Wren, and Bryan Wren and all who knew and loved hime as ``Uncle Bill."" HALL, James Robert, 85, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, March 15, 1997 in the Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley. JOHNSON, James M., (``Monty''), 52, of Vinton, died Sunday, March 16, 1997. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Alcoy and Anna Martin Johnson; and his beloved son, James Stacy Johnson. He was a native of the Roanoke area and was a graduate of VPI & SU and held a Master's Degree from the University of Virginia. He was an educator, having served as a teacher in Prince William County and a secondary school administrator in Bedford and Roanoke Counties. He was principal of the Arnold R. Burton Technology Center at the time of his death. He was a member of many civic and professional organizations, including the Virginia and National Associations of Secondary School Principals, the Region VI Vocational Educators Association and the State VICA Advisory Panel. He received recognition from the Virginia Association of Vocational Administrators, State VICA Leadership Contest, and was elected to The VICA Hall of Fame in 1995. He was an active member of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church and served on the administrative board and numerous committees. Monty is survived by his wife of 30 years, Mary Echols Johnson; many aunts; uncles; and cousins. A memorial service will be held at Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, with the Rev. Wm. Anthony Layman and the Rev. George Wesley Jones officiating. LUCAS, Darrell Dee, 64, of 601 Wenonah Ave., Pearisburg, died Sunday morning, March 16, 1997 at his home following a long illness. Born in Giles County, he was a son of the late Clarence A. and Helen Stewart Lucas. He was a retired employee of Giles County and preceded in death by a half brother, Richard Lucas. Surviving are two daughters, Benita and Ora Lea Lucas, both of Pearisburg; a stepdaughter, Jackie Bandy of Pembroke; one brother, Dickie Lucas of Pearisburg; a sister, Pat Beasley of Fairburn, Ga.; a half brother, Robert Lucas of West Virginia; and five grandchildren. NELSON, Phyllis Ann Lineberry, 58, of Salem, passed away Monday, March 17, 1997, at her home. She w as a daughter of the late Harbert and Annie Lineberry. Mrs. Nelson was a seamstress for many years and more recently served as a private duty nurse. She was a longtime member of the Faith Fellowship. Surviving are her husband, Maynard Guy Nelson; daughters, Rhonda G. Gibson, Roanoke, Manah A. St.Clair, Terri L. Payne, Lisa M. OYLER, Mary Jane, of Roanoke County, died Sunday, March 16, 1997. Mary Jane was a retired administrative assistant from Colonial-American National Bank and was attending Ninth Street Church of the Brethren. Surviving are her aunts, Elizabeth O. PAGANS, Annie Lee Altice, 97, of Roanoke went to be with the Lord, March 17, 1997. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ewell Pagans, a son, William Curtis Pagans, a granddaughter, Wilma Jean Pagans, a great-great grand daughter, Ashleigh Nichole Swain. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Pearl Holdren, sons, Melvin Ewell Pagans, Lonza Ray Pagans, daughter-in-law, Pau line Lugar Pagans all of Roanoke; also surviving are nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren. STULTZ, Ruby Young, 74, of Autumn Crest, Collinsville, formerly of Rocky Mt. and Oak Level, passed away Sunday, March 16, 1997 at Community Hospital of Roanoke, Va. She was the wife of the late Charles H. Stultz, Sr. Born in Franklin County on December 31, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Thomas S. Young and Winnie Lovell Young. She was a charter member of the Oak Level Baptist Church. Mrs. Stultz was preceded in death by a sister, Lottie Young Gibbs, three brothers, Lowell, Lauren and Leslie Young, and a grandson, Chris Stultz. Surviving are a daughter, Teresa S. Doss, Winchester; two sons, Charles H. Stultz, Jr., and Dwight A. Stultz, both of Martinsville; three sisters, Mrs. Ryland (Eva) Coleman and Mrs. H. D. WALTERS, Lucy Woolwine, 79, of Christiansburg, went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 16, 1997. She was a faithful member of Park United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Swain, and ve ry special son-in-law, Billy Swain, of Christiansburg; her son, Bobby Woolwine, and daughter-in-law, Carol Woolwine, of Salem; five grandchildren, Sharon Proffitt of Chesapeake, Susan Turner of Salem, Stacie Swain of Christiansburg, Jason Woolwine of Salem, and Chris Taylor of Leesburg; three great-grandchildren, Lauren and Nathan Proffitt of Chesapeake, and Jacob Turner of Salem; a special niece and her husband, Jean and Winston Thompson of Check; and many special friends. WAUGH, John Blair, 71, of Galax, passed away on Monday, March 17, 1997, at Duke Hospital in Durham, N.C. He was the son of Dan Blair and Hazel Phipps Waugh, and a graduate of Galax High School, and the McCallie School, Chattanooga, Tenn. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy, he attended Duke University, where he graduated Cum Laude in 1949. A member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, he served on the Fraternity Council and the Duke Golf Team. He graduated from Harvard Business School in 1951. He was in the retail business at Dan B. Waugh & Company, Inc. until 1973. He also served as president of the Galax Rotary Club. For many years he served as Director at First National, Dominion, and now First Union Bank. He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Galax Elks Club, and in 1996 was given a life membership for his service to the club. He is survived by his wife, Nancee Steelman Waugh; a daughter and son-in-law, Laura Jeanne and Roland Evans Walters Jr. of Blacksburg; a son and daughter-in-law, John Barron and Mary Paul Waugh of Wake Forest, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles Richard and Carolyn Harris Waugh of Sebring, Fla.; and a beloved aunt, Miss Celene Phipps of Independence. Three grandchildren also survive, Brett Ashton Walters, Evan Blair Walters, and Ethan Hunter Walters of Blacksburg. Funeral services for Mr. Waugh will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Nation officiating. Burial will follow in the Felts Memorial Cemetery. WOOLWINE, Mayme R., 85, of 102 Ralston St., Bluefield, W.Va., died Sunday, March 1 6, 1997, at a Bluefield hospital. Born in Ingleside, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Thomas and Betty Woolwine. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles B. Woolwine. She was the last member of her family. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Kathryn McCall Woolwine of Bluefield, Va.; nieces, Janet W. Watterson of Jensen Beach, Fla. and Jane W. Meyer of Charlotte, N.C.; and other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 19, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Bluefield, Va. with the Rev. Rick Spell officiating. Burial will follow at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield, Va. Close friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Woolwine residence. Serving as pallbearers will be Ervin Rich, Roscoe Matney, Charles Addington, Clay Pendleton, Ted Yost, and Bill Osborne. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church and the Bluefield, Va. Rescue Squad. Rodriguez Funeral Home of Bluefield, Va. is in charge of arrangements.

WRIGHT, Lula Turperance, 94, of Bassett, died Monday, March 17, 1997. Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday, Collins Funeral Chapel.
