It's time to give the valley a good spring cleaning.
Most communities around the New River Valley are hoping to work together with groups of volunteers to clean up trash and litter in the next few weeks.
Church groups, clubs, civic organizations, fraternities, sororities and other groups lend their muscle power to participate in the program.
Radford and Montgomery, Pulaski, Giles and Floyd counties are all encouraging residents to pitch in on special days during April. Volunteers will clean roads, rivers, school grounds and illegal dumpsites. The local municipalities generally provide the trash pickup. In some cases, they also reward volunteers with a picnic.
Montgomery County volunteers collected almost 150 tons of litter during the county's 1996 Broomin' and Bloomin' Cleanup. This year they will begin at 7 a.m. April 19. All volunteers will receive a Broomin' and Bloomin' T-shirt and an invitation to a free picnic. To volunteer, call Linda Crable at 382-5793.
Radford volunteers will participate in the city's Cleanin 'n' Greenin program April 12. Volunteers will work from 8 a.m. to noon, when a gathering for food and music will be held at the fountain on the Radford University campus. To volunteer, call Larry Amy at 731-3604 during afternoon hours or Bob Thomas at 633-0081 in the evenings.
Pulaski will hold cleanups each weekend of April, beginning April 5. The town and county are working jointly on the project. To volunteer call Larry Vest at 674-8667.
Floyd County is seeking individuals as well as groups for its Green and Clean Day. Individuals can meet at the Jacksonville Center April 19 at 8 a.m. to join dump-site cleanup teams. Groups can be organized to clean roadways. After the cleanup, a picnic will be held. An orientation meeting for group leaders will be held April 17 at 7:30 in the county courthouse. Group leaders should call David Sower at 763-2307.
Giles County wants volunteers for its Clean Sweep program April 19. After cleaning from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. volunteers will be treated to a picnic at 1 p.m. and will receive a free T-shirt. To volunteer, call Mike Clemmons at 626-7046.
