About ``Fears of immigration underrate America,'' March 28:
From EDWARD ALLEN, Clifton Forge
Since the 1965 Immigration Act, we are basically importing an underclass. [By one estimate] 21 percent of immigrants are on some type of public assistance as opposed to 14 percent of native-born Americans. This is our problem. We are not importing workers that are contributing to the system.
About ``Jim Gilmore's conflict,'' March 29:
From ARNOLD JOHNSON, Salem
He's an attorney who is supposed to represent the people of Virginia. And after all the publicity we've gotten over cigarette smoking and the damage it is causing health-wise, for him to continue to say he's not going to enter a lawsuit against these tobacco companies! I think he should be forced to resign.
About ``Bipartisan insurance for a brighter future,'' March 31:
From TED SHELTON, Blacksburg
Other than because of blatant bias against smokers, why do you propose to finance this thing entirely through a tax on tobacco? A whole lot more people in this country drink coffee than smoke cigarettes. Why don't we put the tax on coffee?
About ``Get over it, Kanawha County,'' April 1:
From DAVID SANZO, Roanoke
We live in a capitalistic society. Nobody has a guarantee of any jobs. So that county in West Virginia needs to wake up and realize it has to compete - not by giving unrealistic incentives, but smart incentives like the development of the infrastructure here in Roanoke County.
