FIRETRUCK CRASHES ON WAY TO A FIRE

A Roanoke County firetruck was slightly damaged Monday night after it crashed on the way to a call. No one was seriously injured.

The Fort Lewis pumper truck was responding to a vehicle fire on the narrow, two-lane Wildwood Road near Salem about 7:30 p.m. when the accident occurred, police said.

The firefighter realized he had driven past the fire scene and slowed down, Roanoke County Police Officer J.A. Chapman said. He would not identify the driver, because the accident is still under investigation.

The truck's right front wheel ran onto the soft shoulder as it rounded a curve and tipped over, he said.

The firetruck met an ambulance near the curve, but police have not determined whether that contributed to the accident.

Damage to the truck appeared to be cosmetic, and authorities estimated damages at $3,500, Chapman said.

Fort Lewis Deputy Chief Pat Hallahan, who was riding in the firetruck, said that after everything the four-man crew went through, the fire turned out to be a short circuit with smoke but no flames.
