ADAIR, Elva Allen, 58, of Hillsville, formerly of Bedford, died Monday, April 14, 1997 at the Roanoke Memorial Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Bedford County on July 10, 1938, a daughter of the late Homer Franklin Allen and Lina Miller Ramsey Allen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Irene Burnette and Lola Virginia Falls, two brothers, William F. Allen and Russell Clay Allen. Elva was owner and operator of Adair's Blu Vue Restaurant. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Baird Adair, Hillsville; former husband, Joseph Richard Burnett, Bedford; a daughter, Dawn Renee Groseclose, Gambrills, Md.; three sons, Joseph Richard Burnette, Jr., Bedford, Roderick Clayton Burnette and Rodney Allen Burnett both of Hillsville; two daughters-in-law, Lynette and Miriam Burnette; son-in-law, Russell Groseclose; five sisters, Mildred Overstreet, Moneta, Lucille Gerngross, San Angelo, Texas, Lena Mae Sligh, Madison Heights, Dawn Valleda Dennis, Blue Ridge, Sheron Cheek, Bedford; five grandchildren, Roxanne Burnette and Cory Burnette, both of Atlanta, Ga., Jacklyn Groseclose and Jennifer Groseclose, both of Gambrills, Md., Zachary and Lindsey Burnette, both of Bedford. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 1997, at Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. George C. Law officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. ARMBRISTER, Herman Hicks, 82, of Wythe County, died Sunday, April 13, 1997 at his home. He was a well-known farmer in Wythe County. He was born February 6, 1915 the son of James H. and Bessie Aker Armbrister. Herman was preceded in death by three brothers, Victor, Luther, and Randolph Armbrister, and one sister, Lutie Grimes. A life time member of the Olive Branch United Methodist Church, Herman loved the church and every aspect of his work there. He was a veteran school teacher in the Counties of Tazewell and Wythe and was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition plant. He is survived by his wife, Luetta ``Rita"" Hartsock Armbrister; one son, Dale Armbrister, Greenville, S.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa Anne Armbrister Sayers and Dwight Sayers, Wytheville; one granddaughter, Ashley Sayers; and one grandson, Mckenzie Sayers; two sisters, Marjorie Alley of Wytheville, Betty Boye of Bristol; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville on Tuesday, April 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. A celebration of life will be at Olive Branch United Methodist Church Wednesday, April 16, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Carrico officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. CASTELLON, Philip H., Jr., 63, of Moneta, died Thursday, April 10, 1997 in Cocoa Beach, Fla. He was born in New Haven, CT on April 18, 1933, a son of the late Philip H. Castellon, Sr. and Madeline DeMaio Castellon. He was a communicant of Resurrection Catholic Church and was a retired manager with Nationwide Insurance. Philip was a graduate of University of Connecticut and an Army veteran, serving in Korea. He is survived by his wife, Joan Bruning Castellon, Moneta; two brothers, Ralph Castellon, Newington, CT., Joseph Castellon, Hamden, CT; one sister, Marie Cadwell, St. Petersburg, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, 1997, at the Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta, with Father James J. Begley officiating. DAVIS, Harold Kinley, of Roxboro, N.C., died Saturday, April 12, 1997 at the Rose Manor Nursing Home. He was a native of Washington County and was retired from the Norfolk Southern Railroad. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ernestine Gregory Davis; four sons, Larry Dean Davis, Roxboro, N.C., Garry G. HAGA, Virginia Chaffin, 73, of Newport News and Richmond, formerly of Pulaski, Va., departed this earthly life to be with her Lord on Monday, April 14, 1997. A native of Pulaski, she retired from Burlington Industries in Dublin and Radford Arsenal in Radford, Va. She was a charter member of Pulaski Presbyterian Church in America on Memorial Drive. She took many opportunities to travel extensively with her grandchildren throughout the U. S. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, George R. Haga and Linda Foley Haga of Richmond; her daughter and son-in-law, Sue Haga Townsend and Kenneth W. Townsend of Newport News; five grandchildren, Brian C. Bell, Valarie J. Haga, Betsy S. Bell, Michelle Haga Johnson and Barry D. Bell, as well as five great-grandchildren, Alexandra M. Bell, Alexander C. Johnson, James and Jesse Cannon and Morgan Jennings. Also surviving are her brothers and sisters, Hazel Chaffin Galloway, James A. Chaffin, kenneth E. Chaffin, Charles D. Chaffin and Betty Chaffin Hughes, all of Pulaski. She is also survived by her many friends and other relatives, including G. W. and Peggy Galloway of Dublin and Deborah Nichols of Newport News. He was a member of the Vintonite Mixed Bowling League. He was predece ased by his brothers, Frank, David and Tommy Johnson. She was a long-time member of the Shenandoah Baptist Church, and was retired from the Roanoke City N ursing Home. She was predeceased by her father, Jamie Gregory; her husband, Howard Grant Roope; and an infant son, Charles Ace Roope. Surviving are her mother, Ernie Frances Gregory, Roanoke; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra Leigh and Kenneth Wayne Davis, Roanoke; sons, Larry Grant Roope, Roanoke, and Edward Shannon Roope, Salem; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy Jane and Lewis Ray Eanes, Roanoke; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was a member of Airlee Court Baptist Church, a retiree from the Norfolk & Western Railway, and a member (since 1940) of Virginia Heights Lodge #324 AF & AM. Mr. Smith was also a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and the Kazim Shrine Temple. He was an avid golfer and a member of Blue Hills Golf Club. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1982 and worked as a Design Engineer for Norfolk-Southern. Jerome also served as a Captain in the U. S. Army Reserve. He was predeceased by his mother, Marguerite William. He is survived by his wife, Jan Boyd Williams of Roanoke; father and stepmother, Langston and Loretta Williams, Buffalo Gap; two sisters, Lina Davis, Oxford, Mississippi and Rosie Williams, Anchorage, Alaska; two brothers, Langston Williams, Jr. Buffalo Gap, and Joseph Williams, Newport News; mother and father-in-law, Charles and Estella Boyd, Hampton; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be Thursday, April 17, 1997, at 10:30 in the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Chapel.
