ADAMS, Ruby Harris 85, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 1997 in a Roanoke hospital. She was predeceased by her first husband, Charles Edward Harris Sr. Surviving are her husband, F. Glenn Adams, a daughter, Mary L. Aughenbaugh and her husband George of Roanoke; three sons, William F. Harris of Richmond; Charles E. Harris Jr., of Maryland and Ed Harris of Blue Ridge; a sister, Lydia Higgins of Lexington; 12 grandchildren and 5 great -grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 1997 from Oakey's North Chapel. Mr. Jim Perry will officiate. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. CALDWELL, Eulabelle Beckner, 89, of Radford, died Thursday, April 17, 1997, in a Blacksburg nursing home. She was the widow of Jesse W. Caldwell, and was a retired employee of Southern Bell Telephone Co. Surviving are a stepson, Robin Kuhn Caldwell, New York; a brother-in-law, W. A. Caldwell, Radford; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Caldwell, Pleasant Valley; along with several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 1997, at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Clarence Dishman officiating. Interment will follow in the Caldwell Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
CARVER, William Perry, 81, of Miami, Fla., formerly of Blacksburg, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 1997. He is survived by a daughter, Janice Butler; son-in-law; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 26, at the United Methodist Church of Blacksburg.
DAVIS, Phillip Gene, (``Henry''), 55, of Pulaski, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 1997, after a brief illness. He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Walter C. and Mabel Lena Ratliff Davis. He was a retired mechanical engineer from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, and had attended the First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski. He was an avid bass fisherman and a wonderful person and friend to many. He is survived by Ione L. Davis of Pulaski; two daughters, Vance Carolyn Davis and Jean Lena Davis, both of Pulaski; a sister, Sandra George of Laurel, Md.; an aunt, Lu Dirickson of Arlington; a nephew, Walter Gene Davis of Pulaski. A private graveside service and interment will be held in the Davis Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.
DIVERS, Mary Virginia Durbin, 78, of Salem, passed away Thursday, April 17, 1997, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was retired from the Hollins College Book Store; and was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; two sisters; a granddaughter, Jo Alice Thompson. She is survived by many friends; and four beloved daughters, Peggy Thompson, Salem, Patricia Johnston and husband, Wallace, Blue Ridge, Pamela Brown and husband, Bart, of Des Moines, Iowa, Becky Connolly, Salem; six grandchildren, David Thompson, Michael Carner and wife, Cathy, Jeff Carner, Lee Ann Brown, Melissa Fore, Rice Owens; five great-grandchildren, Ashley and Stephanie Carner, Brad and Tyler Brown, Danny Thompson. A celebration of her life with family and friends will be held Saturday, April 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at 2512 Creston Ave. S.W., Roanoke, the home of special friends, H. W. Scott and Roger Kingery.
FLANAGAN, Robert Morse, (``Buck''), 66 years old, loving husband, father and grandfather, died at his residence on Wednesday, April 16, 1997. A retired Pharmacist and U. S. Army Veteran, he was a graduate of Ferrum College and George Washington University. He was a member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, and was Co-Chairman of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, and their loving children, John, Roanoke; Charles, Glendale, Calif.; David and wife, Barbara, Roanoke; Virginia and husband, Doug Williams, Chilhowie; Kara, Roanoke; Kimberly and husband, Randy Lower, Roanoke; granddaughters, Caitlin Flanagan, Caroline and Lee Anne Lower and Miriam Flanagan. In addition, he is survived by his aunt, Helen Shires, Covington; uncle, Montague Hahn, Chesapeake; specially loved cousins, church family, McGhee Run Club and Countryside Golf Senior Members. His gentle and noble spirit profoundly influenced all who were fortunate enough to have known him. Funeral services at Oakey's South Chapel on Saturday, April 19, 1997 at 11 a.m., to be conducted by the Rev. Robert L. Watts and the Rev. Walter M. Lockett, Jr. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Oakey's South Chapel, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. GOAD, Richard Lee 71, of Roanoke, formerly of Beckley, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, April 16, 1997, as quietly as he lived his life. He was an Army veteran of World War II and had worked for over 30 years in the Roanoke Valley as a shoe repairman. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Emma Sue Teel Goad; his sons and daughter-in-law, David Lee Goad, Richard H. (Otis) and Vicky Goad, all of Roanoke; his stepgrandchildren, Tonya and Stephanie; his sisters, Edith Adams, Beckley, W.Va., Pearl Grumbine, Westminister, Md.; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel Saturday, April 19, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Keith Wagner officiating. Interment in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. GRAHAM, Annie Collins, 100, of Christsiansburg, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, He nry Lee Graham; and one son, Harry Raymond Graham. Mrs. Graham is survived by one daughter, Allene Graham; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Ruby Graham, Fred and Nancy Graham, all of Christiansburg; one daughter-in-law, Louise Graham of Apopka, Fla.; two granddaughters and their families, Annette and Tyler Burkett, Carson and Mackinzie of Mechanicsville, Krin and Douglas Turpin, Roanoke; two grandsons and their families, Robert Lee Graham Jr., Richard and Teresa Graham of Christiansburg. HALL, Myrtle Saunders, 76, of Tanyard Village, Rocky Mount, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 1997. She was preceded in death by her parents, Forest B. and Grace Cundiff Saunders; two sisters, Ruth S. Hodges and Emma S. Barger; three brothers, George Lee, Leonard and Wilford Saunders. Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Agnes Hall Hodges, Roanoke, Judy Hall and husband, Joe N. Sailor, Hardy; five grandchildren and spouses, Mark and Belinda Hodges, Michael and Melanie Hodges, all of Rocky Mount, Lisa and Terry Meador, Boones Mill, Kenneth and Diane (Missy) Hodges, Charlotte, N.C., Amy Stephenson, Gainesville, Fla.; granddaughter-in-law, Rebecca Miller, Rocky Mount; two stepgrandchildren and spouses, Theresa and Ed Peterson, Forest, Debbie and Brian Cribbet, Conway, S.C.; five great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren. Also surviving are one aunt, Myrtle Cundiff, Roanoke; brother-in-law, George H. HOFFMAN, Thomas Lewis Sr., 59, of Lexington, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, at the V.A. Medical Center. Born September 17, 1937 in Lexington, he was the son of Beulah Chandler Hoffman of Lexington and the late John Harrison Hoffman. He was an artist, as well as employed by KFC. He loved vegetable gardening. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lexington, and attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Military, having served his country first in the U.S. Air Force and again in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Archalane Worrell Hoffman, Lexington; five children, Thomas Lewis Hoffman Jr., Charlottesville, Lisa Michelle Hoffman, Baltimore, Md., Mark Hoffman, California, John Joseph Hoffman and Myrna Johnson, Roanoke; four stepchildren, Dwayne W. McCauley and Susan L. Mehfoud, both of Richmond, Keith M. McCauley, Vinton, and James M. McCauley, Jarrett; two brothers, Bill Hoffman, Roanoke, and Ernest Minor, Goshen; a number of grandchildren. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 1997, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jeff Taylor and the Rev. LaVert H. Taylor officiating. JONES, Anna Mae, 71, of Roanoke, died in a local hospital Wednesday, April 16, 1997. She was a member of the Colonial American Bank Retirees Club, surviving are her husband, Harry A. Jones Jr., son and daughter in-law, Harry A. and Donna Pillis Jones III, two grandchildren Harry A. Jones IV, Hamilton Adam Jones all of Roanoke; also two brothers, W. Archie Turner of Raleigh N.C. and Robert S. Turner of Highpoint N.C.; al so several nieces and nephews. KESLER, Ruth Grisso, 87, of Moneta, formerly of Canterbury Park, Roanoke County, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997 at Lewis-Gale Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, James T. Kesler, Sr. She was Owner and Operator of Cave Spring Hardware. She is survived by a daughter, Nadine Kesler, Moneta; two sons and daughter-in-law, J. T., Jr. and Linda Kesler, Roanoke, Engle Kesler, Sr., Moneta; a sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Hugh Whitlow, Salem. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 19, 1997 at 10 a.m. at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. William C. Logan officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. MORTON, Melvin Gene, of Christiansburg, formerly of Louisville, Ky., departed this life Wednesday, April 16, 1997. Born March 25, 1950 in Louisville, Ky., he was the son of Barrington Morton Jr. and Teresa Rogers Morton. Melvin graduated from Central High School in 1969, where he played basketball on the State Championship Team. He later attended Bacone Junior College in Muskogee, Okla. and Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla., where he also was a star basketball player. He was employed for the last 20 years in Juvenile Corrections in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. His most recent position was Superintendent of the Roanoke Juvenile Detention Center. He was baptized in Jesus' name in 1980 in Tulsa, Okla. and in 1993 he joined Abundant Grace Assembly, where he remained a member until his death. Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Clarresa Moore Morton; daughter, Michaela Genee Morton of the home; mother, Mrs. Teresa Buckner; father, Barrington Morton Jr. of Louisville, Ky.; five brothers, Darryl, Geary, Vincent and Barrington Morton of Louisville, and Tony Campbell of Milwaukee, Wis.; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Relatives in this area include his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bishop and Mrs. Clarence E. Moore, Bluefield, Va., formerly of Gary, W.Va. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Greater Mt. Zion Pentecostal Church, 104 Park Street, Bluefield, W.Va. District Elder Delmar L. Jackson II will officiate. NEICE, William Franklin, 53, of Pearisburg, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr. Neice was born on September 8, 1943 in Giles County, and was a son of the late Albert James and Bertha Mae Snidow Neice. Mr. Neice is survived by his wife, Mary Maggie Conley Neice of Pearisburg; two sons, Fr anklin Eugene Neice of Pearisburg, William Edward Neice of Colorado Springs, Colo; four brothers, Bobby, James, and Lewis Neice, all of Pearisburg, and Lawrence Neice of Florida; and three grandchildren. PERDUE, Lenford Clark, 79, of Rocky Mount, died Wednesday, April 16, 1997, at Eldercare of Franklin County. He was a life-long member of the Doe Run Christian Church. Mr. Perdue was a son of the late James Ballard and Kate Morris Perdue. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Andrew Taylor Perdue and Robert Stephen Perdue, and his wife, Lorraine Nunley Perdue. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Beverly (Ethel) Ogden, Roanoke, Mrs. Conrad (Catherine) Bennett and Mrs. Howard (Ruth) Wray, both of Rocky Mount; three brothers, James Benjamin Perdue, W. Buford Perdue and his wife, Gladys, all of Rocky Mount, William Morris (Bill) Perdue and his wife, Nadine, Martinsville; one sister-in-law, Sally W. Perdue of Roanoke; six nephews; three nieces. PETERS, Dr. James P., 73, of Fruitland Park, Fla., died Thursday, April 17, 1997. Dr. Peters was a retired Chiropractor. He was born in Appalachia, Va. and moved to Fruitland Park in 1969 from Orlando, Florida. He was a member of the Morrison United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the American Chiropractic Association, Florida Chiropractic Association and the American Legion, and an Army Air Force veteran of WWII. Survivor s include his wife, Nancy Peters, Fruitland, Fla.; daughter, Diane Cook, Lady Lake, Fla.; son, William Peters, Kilgore, Texas; brother, R. SARTIN, Susan Jean, 32, of Glen Lynn, died Thursday morning, April 17, 1997. She was born in Roanoke, Va. on May 16, 1964 and was the daughter of Joel J. Sartin of Salem and Alice Reese Sartin of Narrows. She was a graduate of Narrows High School and was an employee of Oxford Industries of Eggleston, Va. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a son, Steven Anthony Meadows of Glen Lyn; two brothers, Darrell Sartin of Glen Lyn and Jeffrey Sartin of Narrows; her maternal grandmother, Delphia Reece, Dublin; and her paternal grandmother, Lucy Sartin of Salem. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows, with Mike Lynn and the Rev. E. G. Stafford officiating. She is survived by three sons, William Theodore (Bill) Waddell, Jr. and wife, Dora, Glen Wilton, James Richard Waddell and wife, Jan, Fairfax, David Barry Waddell, Leesburg; one brother, Starritt Holmes; one sister, Isabelle Windsor, both of Mt. WILSON, Carnie Arnold, 72, of Wilmington, Del., died Sunday, April 13, 1997, in the Medical Center of Delaware. Mr. Wilson was born in Carroll County, Va. September 26, 1924 to Alonzo David Wilson and Flora Carpenter Wilson. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Akers Wilson of Wilmington; two daught ers, Belinda Wilson Burris of Rock Hall, Md., Connie Gonzalez of Hermleigh, Texas; two sons, Arnold Lee Wilson of Wilmington, Del., and Ronald David Wilson of Newark, Del.; one sister, Lena Edwards of Galax; three brothers, Arlie Wilson, Delmar Wilson, and Barnie Wilson, all of Radford. Six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Pastor Clevie Bell officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland United Methodist Church Cemetery with military rites by Hillsville V.F.W. Post #1115.
