A forest fire in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests in Craig County was contained Saturday afternoon.
Firefighters left the scene about 5 p.m. Saturday, but will return periodically until it rains to check for flare-ups, said Dave Olson, public information officer for the U.S. Forest Service. The fire burned about 17 acres.
A fire investigator spent several hours crawling around the site where the fire started, Olson said. He didn't find any evidence, but officials believe a person walking on a nearby trail accidentally started the fire, possibly by dropping a lit cigarette.
