TECH WOMEN KEEP TOP ASSISTANT DUNKENBERGER WILL REMAIN ON BASKETBALL STAFF

Beth Dunkenberger has been instrumental in the Hokies' recruiting efforts the past three years.

Bonnie Henrickson didn't have to look long or far to find the first member of her Virginia Tech women's basketball coaching staff.

Henrickson, hired Tuesday as the Hokies' coach, announced Monday she will retain the services of longtime Tech assistant coach Beth Dunkenberger.

Dunkenberger served as the top assistant to former Hokies head coach Carol Alfano for the past two seasons. The Shawsville native has been on the Tech staff since beginning her coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1988.

``I'm happy I have the opportunity to remain part of this program,'' Dunkenberger said. ``I was sweating it for a while. I wasn't looking forward to having to go somewhere else.''

Dunkenberger was one of six finalists interviewed by Hokies athletic director Dave Braine to replace Alfano, who was fired March 12 after 19 seasons at Tech.

``They gave me an opportunity for the job, which I appreciated,'' Dunkenberger said. ``I think I did a good job in my interview. In the end, they obviously felt Bonnie was the one for the job. I don't have any problem with that. I'm a fan of Virginia Tech, and all I want is what's best for this school.''

Dunkenberger will begin her fourth season as the Hokies' recruiting coordinator. She was instrumental in signing Michelle Hollister and Kim Seaver, the team's respective leading scorers the past two seasons. Tech's latest class includes Lord Botetourt High School star Sarah Hicks and fourth-team Parade All-American Tere Williams, who turned down a scholarship offer from national power Connecticut.

``There's no doubt we're recruiting higher-profile players now,'' Dunkenberger said. ``Football has helped us a lot. People are a little more familiar with Virginia Tech through the football team's success. I think things will only get better for us.''

Henrickson still has to hire a second full-time aide. Sources within the athletic department say the Hokies are not likely to retain Jill Jameson.
