ADKINS, Vida Vest, 84, of Vinto n, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 1997. Mrs. Adkins was born October 28, 1912 to the late Robert (Bob Lee) and Lucy B. Vest. She was a member of Waverly Place Baptist Church and Local I.L.G.W.U. 400 Union. She was a retired employee of Kenrose Manufacturing Company. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Sherman Byer Vest, Ollie L. Vest, Elliot Vest, Otis Vest and Allen D. Vest, two sisters, Bertie V. Poff and Annie Rene Lovern. Surviving are two sisters and a brother-in-law, Bessie Craighead McDonald, Copper Hill, Elizabeth Virginia and Lewis W. Crouch, Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Christine Vest, Check, Eloise Vest, Copper Hill; a brother-in-law, Lewis P. Lovern; also surviving are a dear friend, Florence Thompson; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 1997 at Lotz Roanoke Chapel. The Rev. Charles Hoffler will officiate. Interment will follow in Wilson Cemetery, Floyd County. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Roanoke.
ALEXANDER, Catherine Lucille Hylton, 76, of Sunset Drive, Stuart, died Monday, April 21, 1997, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, N.C. She was born on February 5, 1921 in Patrick County to the late Luther Wade Hylton and the late Fannie Cockram Hylton. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Alexander was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Oscar Alexander, who was the owner and operator of the former Alexander's Food Market in Stuart. Mrs. Alexander was a member of Stuart Baptist Church, a homemaker and an amateur artist. Mrs. Alexander is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ron (Linda) Lawson of Spartanburg, S.C.; one son, William Wade Alexander of Stuart; one sister, Emma Wood of Florida; one half sister, Allie Latham of Greensboro, N.C.; and five grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Alexander will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Stuart Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Churchwell officiating. Burial will follow in the Stuart Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the homeplace at 102-A Sunset Drive, Stuart. Moody Funeral Home in Stuart is in charge of the arrangements. FARMER, Judith Overstreet, 56, of Petersburg, died at her home in Petersburg, Va. on Monday, April 21,1997. She was the daughter of the late Kenneth E. Overstreet and Marie Simmons Overstreet. Survivors include her husband, Harry L. Farmer of Petersburg; her stepmother, Edna F. Overstreet; brother and sister-in-law, Robert E. and Kay Overstreet; sister and brother-in-law, Janet O. and George W. Nester. FAW, Leona Hale Spradlin, 79, of Blacksburg died Tuesday, April 22, 1997. She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Patsy and Gene Elliott of Walkertown, N.C., Dolly Huff, Christiansburg, and Doris and Bobby Smith of Blacksburg; two sons and their wives, Wayne and Kathy Spradlin of Walnut Cove, N.C. and William (Chuck) and Donna Spradlin of Blue Ridge, Va.; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers and their wives, William and Alene Hale, Warren and Gertrude Hale, all of Blacksburg and Clifford (Pete) Hale of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sisters and their husbands, Pauline and Russell Alls and Pearl Hawley, all of Blacksburg; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn Jeannette Sligh; five brothers, Howard, Garland, Andy, Claude Hale and Carlisle Sites, two sisters, Ruth Price and Clara Kanode. The family will receive friends and family from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at McCoy Funeral Home. The funeral will be Thursday at Slussers Chapel Church of God on Mt. Tabor Road at 11 a.m. She will be buried in the Whitlock Cemetery on Mt. Tabor Road.
FISHER, Earl Junior, 49, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, April 21, 1997. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his father, James Fisher. He is survived by his wife, Brenda S. Fisher, Roanoke; two daughters, Earlene L. Fisher and Brenda A. Fisher, both of Roanoke; his mother, Della Mae Fisher, Boones Mill; three brothers, Bill Fisher, Roanoke, Wallace Fisher and James Fisher, both of Boones Mill; one sister, Mary Ann (Albert T.) GLASS, Lula Mason, 83, of Winches ter, died Saturday, April 19, 1997 in Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Lexington. She was born August 16, 1913 in Buena Vista, Va., daughter of Otey D. and Luletta Victoria Tolley Mason. Mrs. Glass was a housewife and a member of Blue Ridge Grace Brethren Church. She was married to Ross D. Glass, who died April 30, 1988. Survivors include her son, Marshall ``Joe"" R. Glass of Natural Bridge Station; daughters, LaVerne G. Ramsey, Winchester, Frances G. Clark, Fort Worth, Texas, Shelby G. Dodd, Newport News, Lisa Glass, Stephens City; sisters, Estele Miller, Waynesboro, Arlene Lawhorne, Buena Vista; brothers, James O. GRAHAM, William Thomas, (``Tom''), 85, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, April 22, 1997, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born on June 29, 1911 to the late Hubert B. and Minnie Mae Cooper Graham; and was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Thomas (Jimmie) Graham; by two brothers, Harry Graham and Earl Graham; and by a sister, Ina Graham Price. He is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law, Delilah and Bob McConnell, Radford, Barbara and Dalbert Croy, Blacksburg, Juanita and Ed Horton, Hillsville, Flanders and Jay Ousey, Hopewell, Carolina and Fred Hammond, Angela and Randy Shipley, all of Kingsport, Tenn.; three sons and daughters-in-law, William H. and Clara Ann Graham, Harry K. and Nancy Graham, Denson T. and Vickie Graham, all of Blacksburg; 27 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dolly Long, Blacksburg, Ethel Neighbors, Roanoke, and Clara Schnell, Blacksburg; two brothers, John Graham and Fred Graham, both of Blacksburg; and a special friend, Julie Noonkester. LEMON, E. Marvin, 89, of Roanoke, died at his daughter's home in Richmond Monday, April 21, 1997. He was preced ed in death by his wife, Mary Grace Trout Lemon; a brother, Glenn H. Lemon; and sister, Helen L. Davis. Mr. Lemon was vice president of Valley Lumber Corporation. He attended Duke University and Roanoke College, and was a past president of the Rotary Club of Roanoke. Mr. Lemon was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific. Surviving are three daughters, Lucy Boyd L. Edmunds, Jane L. Marmion, both of Richmond, and Mary Marvin L. Walter of Atlanta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Hugh G. Edmunds III, Armistead Edmunds, and Laura Walter; three brothers, C. K. Lemon, C. Ross Lemon, both of Roanoke, William N. STROUGH, Franklin Pretlow, 54, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Monday, April 21, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Harrisonburg and received a B.S. degree in Health Education at Madison College. He was a representative of the Tuberculosis Association and later a representative of the American Cancer Society. Mr. Strough was a former employee of Levere Business Products and manager of Better Homes Furniture. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, a member of the Wytheville Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and a member of Briar Patch Amateur Radio Club with call letters KK4EJ. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Thompson Strough of the home; two daughters, Lisa Marie Strough of Christiansburg, and Rebecca Lynn Strough of Radford; his parents, Carl F. and Mary Llewellyn Strough of Harrisonburg; a sister and brother-in-law, Llewellyn S. and J. Ronald Allison of Onancock. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 24, 1997, at 10 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Wytheville, with Pastor Peter Ouzts officiating. TAIT, George Edwin Sr., 75, of Vinton, passed away Sunday, April 20, 1997. He was retired from the U.S. Navy after 21 years of service. He was the owner/operator with North American Van Lines for 19 years, and worked f or Burns International Security. He was preceded in death by a son, Calvin A. Tait. He is survived by his wife, Janice S. (Jann) Tait; sons, George E. Tait Jr. of Mauriceville, Texas, Samuel Tait, Beaumont, Texas, Lynn Tait, Port Neches, Texas, Michael Tait, Beaumont, Texas; daughter, Kathy Tait of Winnie, Texas; stepdaughter, Laurie Caldwell, Goldsboro, N.C.; sister, Marjorie Hamilton, Plano, Texas. WALTON, James E., 72, of Independence, formerly of Bel Air, Md., passed away Monday, April 21, 1997 at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax, Va. He was born November 21, 1924 in Crumpler, N.C. to Charlie Sebert and Mary Price Walton. Survivors include a brother, Paul J. Walton, Meadowview; a sister, Hazel Surber, Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
