MAN HOSPITALIZED 10 DAYS ACCUSED OF GRAND LARCENY

{LEAD} Police arrested a Virginia man Wednesday who had spent the last 10 days in Albemarle Hospital claiming to have amnesia.

Michael Ray Haddock, 35, with a Smithfield address, has been charged with grand larceny and was held on $1,000 bond, Capt. W.O. Leary said.

{REST} Haddock was arrested on a warrant from Portsmouth that had been issued earlier.

Elizabeth City police knew for a couple of days that Haddock was wanted and had waited for the paperwork to come through, Leary said.

An initial court appearance was scheduled for this morning, where Haddock must decide whether to fight extradition to Virginia, Leary said.

Haddock, 35, approached a Kill Devil Hills fire station May 22 and told officials he could not remember who or where he was. He has been in the hospital since then.

Family members and former co-workers identified Haddock after news reports about him were aired Friday.

Hospital officials on Wednesday declined to comment. by CNB
