BLUEFIN HITTING OFF OUTER BANKS; BLACK DRUM THICK AT 2ND ISLAND

{LEAD} Bluefin tuna made a strong showing Sunday off the North Carolina Outer Banks northeast of Nags Head, with most fish averaging around 80 pounds.

Most boats in the charter fleet sailing from Oregon Inlet, south of Nags Head, had limit catches of two per person, according to skipper Bob Croswait of the Right Hook.

{REST} ``It was really great fishing,'' said Croswait. ``There were a lot of 80-, 90- and even 100-pound fish. The hottest action was in about 18 fathoms (108 feet) of water.''

The same schools are due off Virginia Beach at any moment and should be greeted by an armada of anglers who have, in recent years, become enthusiastic bluefin fishermen.

On other fronts, big black drum staged a strong showing around the islands of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, with the hottest action at the Second Island.

The phenomenal shellcracker run continued unabated on Western Branch Reservoir in Suffolk. But the weekend's biggest reported shellcracker was a 2-pound, 9-ounce lunker boated at nearby Lake Prince by J.F. Worrell of Suffolk.

About 200 young anglers between the ages of 1 and 17 were treated to a day of competitive pier fishing Saturday by the Virginia Beach Anglers Club. The contest was at the Little Island Fishing Pier at Sandbridge.
