TIGHTEN UP ON MONEY

{LEAD} According to ``Council members squabble over plan to raise workers' pay'' (news, May 11), some Virginia Beach City Council members are playing fast and loose with public money again.

I hope others will note the various pay-raise proposals, some of which would in effect allow recently elected council members to fulfill campaign promises to certain groups of public employees.

{REST} Even more ludicrous is the $300 monthly ``car allowance'' for certain constitutional officers just because certain others already get it. I can see the need for the sheriff or the commonwealth's attorney to have the allowance, but why does City Treasurer John Atkinson, who essentially has a desk job, need this extra pay from the taxpayers?

Just because the council members were safely re-elected, they need not go hog wild.
