BLOOD DONORS NEEDED

{LEAD} The Red Cross has issued an appeal to Type O donors to help replenish its dangerously low supply.

The agency's blood inventory has dipped to a two-day supply, spokeswoman Robyn Klesath said on Tuesday. In order to handle potential emergencies, the Red Cross must maintain a five-day supply.

{REST} The appeal marks the second shortage this year, but it is the first time since 1989 that the Norfolk blood center has targeted donors with a specific blood type. Type O is important because it is compatible with other blood types and can be given to any patient.

It takes about an hour to give blood. Donors must be healthy, at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds or more. For information, call the blood services information line at 446-7281.
