DR. RICHARD ANDREWS' CITIZENSHIP

{LEAD} Kudos to staff writer Karen Jolly Davis on her timely coverage of the firing of Dr. Richard Andrews of the Delmarva Rural Ministries clinic in Nassawadox (``Doctor's dismissal leaves gap on E. Shore,'' news, May 25).

Dr. Andrews' dismissal is a loss to our community that few who do not live here can appreciate, for he not only has worked tirelessly to provide quality health care for the migrant workers here on the Eastern Shore regardless of their ability to pay, he also has contributed to the community as a whole in many other ways.

{REST} He has worked - albeit without success so far - to have the tolls on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel reduced or waived for patients traveling to the Norfolk area for medical treatment. He has helped to start a free library in Northampton County. He has been active on our local American Stop Smoking Intervention Study coalition. He has proved to be a talented member of one of our local theater groups.

In short, Dr. Andrews is not just ``passing through'' our community; he is a member of it. His values and commitment to his fellow man are evident to all here who know him, and if his greatest offense as a physician and health-care provider was that he was discourteous to a federal contractor, one has to wonder about the values and priorities of those who run the Delmarva Rural Ministries and their commitment to the health and lives of the migrant workers that clinic purports to serve.

Delmarva Rural Ministries may be able to find another doctor to work in its clinic. It will not be able to replace Richard Andrews.
