ADAMSON HELPS G. BRIDGE HOLD OFF MONACAN, 4-3

{LEAD} Superb pitching and clutch hitting by Stacey Adamson provided Great Bridge with a 4-3 victory over Monacan Friday in the quarterfinal round of the state softball tournament at Princess Anne High School

Adamson did not surrender a walk and scattered six hits in pitching the Eastern Region champion Wildcats (18-6-1) to their eighth straight victory.

{REST} The win sends Great Bridge into the semifinals against Midlothian, a 1-0 winner over Western Branch, Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Princess Anne.

A senior lefthander headed to Boston University on an academic grant, Adamson drove in what proved to be the winning run against Monacan when she brought two runners home with a bases-loaded double in the third inning.

Monacan (17-5) averted a shutout when shortstop Michelle Meadows powered a 3-run home run over the left field fence in the sixth.

With two outs in the seventh and Great Bridge clinging to a one-run lead, Chiefs designated hitter Farrah Bowers lined a single into centerfield. Reneta Haynes then was inserted as a runner for Bowers.

However, on a steal attempt, Haynes was called out for leaving the base too soon by umpire David Baker. That ended the Monacan rally, and the game.

It was Adamson who started the Wildcats to a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a single into rightfield. Kelly Black attempted to sacrifice Adamson to second and both runners were safe on a throwing error by Chiefs third baseman Manda Bell.

A one-out single up the middle by Marni Magyar scored Adamson with the game's third run. Black then raced home when Jamie Lemnios grounded out to shortstop.

The Wildcats built their lead to 4-0 the following inning as Julie Collins and Emily Ouzts had back-to-back singles and Dana Crisostomo was hit by a pitched ball to fill the bases.

Adamson had retired 10 consecutive batters when she ran into her only trouble in the sixth. Marie Kaminer and Gompf banged singles and Meadows then sent a fast ball over the 15-foot high leftfield fence.

Losing pitcher Katie Moss gave up eight hits, seven in the first three innings. But the freshman fastballer drew praise from the Wildcats.

``There's no doubt she was the fastest pitcher we have faced this year,'' said Magyar, who had two of the Great Bridge hits.

Added Great Bridge coach Noble Palmer: ``It was just that desire that won it for us. I've never seen a team want to win a game more than our team wanted this one.''

In the other state quarterfinals Woodbridge blanked Langley, 3-0, and Gar-Field topped Chantilly, 5-4.
