INJURY ENDS MAURY'S EVANS' STATE TENNIS BID

{LEAD} Maury's Stuart Evans rolled into the semifinals of the Group AAA state tennis singles tournament before an injury forced him to retire.

Evans, the Eastern Region champion, trounced Brent Moyer of George Washington of Danville, 6-4, 6-3, at Davis Park in the quarterfinals.

{REST} But Evans hurt his back in the first set of his semifinal match with Ian Boettcher of Mills Godwin. He tried to continue play, but was forced to quit with Boettcher leading, 6-3, 6-0.

The Western Branch doubles team of Frankie Graves and Kwang Kim, the only other entrants from South Hampton Roads, were also felled Friday. Graves and Kim fell to Josh Levin and Landon Schaefer of Gar-Field, 6-3, 6-4, in the doubles quarterfinals.
