ABOUT THOSE JETTIES

{LEAD} Almost a month has gone by since the urgent meeting between Governor Hunt's Oregon Inlet Jetties Group and local Dare County politicians. I was at that meeting and I came away feeling that there was some urgency to finally get the economically vital project moving. To this end I wrote a letter which was published in the May 15 issue of the Carolina Coast supplement to The Virginian-Pilot. I expressed my reservations in that letter but hoped for the best as far as positive actions arising from that meeting. Although not much time has gone by I am again amazed by the dead silence, with no progress reports, and I must assume nothing is being done.

During this recent stormy period while I was riding across the besieged bridge over Oregon Inlet, I had a horrible thought. ``The people in power just don't get it.'' The urgency of the situation concerning the stabilization of the inlet, the bridge and Highway 12 is not understood by the very people who are in responsible positions to correct the problems.

{REST} At that instant, I realized that the few of us that have been spinning our wheels trying to get the Inlet stablized must call for help from those concerned.

Please help us put the pressure on!! If you want the Inlet stabilized, call, or write to your elected officials (the mayors, commissioners, state legislators, state officials including the governor, the congressional delegation, federal officials and the president).

This is not a partisan issue, it is a survival issue for us all.
