NORTH GIVERS ARE BELIEVERS

{LEAD} I was deeply disturbed by your article on Oliver North's fund raising. It seems he has been more successful than the myriad of other aspiring politicians seeking the Senate seat.

This was not headline material. You could do a similar story on every organization that accepts contributions from the public - from Mr. Miller's campaign to any church or non-profit organization.

{REST} The people you contacted all seemed capable of making financial decisions and strongly believed in North. For this, you made fun of the contributors and implied that North is taking advantage of those unable to reason.

Not all candidates have a millionaire mother-in-law who can finance them. At least the contributors are Americans making their own choices of how to spend their money, not foreign lobbyists or special-interest PACs.

I don't expect to ever see anything positive about North in your paper, but it's amazing that you can make even positive things appear negative and put them on the front page.
