THE WORD FROM KING

{LEAD} Call it a small window of opportunity. I tried to reach Stephen King for this story and sent a letter to his agent asking for an interview, even though he said his client had a busy writing schedule and turned down most requests. Surprise. King called. The bad news is I was away from my desk. We were never able to hook up, but he did leave a very funny explanation on voice mail:

" The short answer to the stuff you asked about is I have no idea why all these high-profiles stars have suddenly turned up in these things. Maybe it's coincidence. Maybe it's ....Satan."
