The 1992 black Honda Accord was demolished in the high-speed crash on Shore Drive after Nelson Aguilar, 19, lost control of the car.
{REST} The passenger, 17-year-old Arvin Lee, was crushed to death after the car slammed into a stand of trees at what police said was ``an extremely high rate of speed'' shortly after 10 a.m.
Both victims were students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk.
Aguilar, a 10th-grade JROTC student of the 3500 block of Riverside Drive in Norfolk, survived the accident but suffered minor injuries, police and school officials said.
Lee, a 9th-grader who lived in the 900 block of Ingleside Drive in Norfolk, was killed on impact in the 57th fatal accident on Shore Drive, the state's deadliest road, since 1977. Police spokesman Mike Carey said Aguilar could face charges stemming from the crash.
Carey said almost all of the fatal crashes on Shore Drive were related to alcohol, excessive speeds or driver inexperience.
Carey said the car was reported stolen June 4. Carey said he did not know if either Aguilar or Lee was involved in the auto theft.
Hampton police spokesman Donnie Moore said the car was stolen in the afternoon from Hampton Plaza, a shopping center on West Mercury Boulevard. The owner had left the keys in the car, Moore said.
The investigation into the crash is continuing.
