GRANBY SOCCER COACH TO RETIRE AFTER TWO DISTRICT TITLES IN ROW

{LEAD} Granby boys soccer coach Mike McStay, who led the Comets to the last two Eastern District titles, is stepping down after 18 years of coaching, the last seven at the Norfolk school.

``I just feel I've taken the program as far as I can,'' McStay said. ``It's time for someone else to come in.''

{REST} McStay, 43, coached high school soccer for eight years in New Jersey and four years in Tampa, Fla., before arriving at Granby.

Although Maury dominated Eastern District soccer throughout most of the 1980s, the Comets have overtaken the Commodores in recent years. Granby is 16-0 in the district the past two seasons.

``The kids have worked really hard to turn this thing around,'' McStay said.

McStay is the director of coaching for Norfolk Youth Soccer, and credits the organization's travel program with polishing the skills of several Granby players.

McStay will continue teaching at Granby, and won't rule out a return to coaching.

As for his immediate future, McStay left for Orlando on Wednesday, where for the next four weeks he will serve as the assistant day-of-game producer for Group F World Cup games.

McStay's duties include making sure the game starts on time and shuttling VIPs on and off the field.

``Basically I'm involved in the running of the game,'' McStay said. ``It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.''

GIRLS SOCCER: First Colonial's Stephanie Smith and Stephanie Reavis have been named to the Virginia High School Coaches Association all-state team for the second consecutive year.

``They don't have a place for me right now,'' O'Dell said. ``Mr. Brown told me that as long as I don't go backward they'll sign me before next year's draft.''

YOUNG A CANDIDATE: The Altoona (Pa.) Mirror has reported that Norview's Ed Young is a candidate for the head coaching job at Altoona Area High.

According to the paper, Young is one of five finalists, and has been interviewed by Altoona athletic director Art Taneyhill.

Young, who won a Group A state championship at Suffolk High before coming to Norview, is a native of Clearfield, Pa. He refused comment Wednesday.

DUKES TAB AUSTIN: Tommy Austin is leaving Ravenscroft to return to Isle of Wight Academy as the head football coach at Windsor.

Austin, 34, coached at Isle of Wight Academy from 1987-93 where he compiled a 27-37 record.

``This area is home for me,'' said Austin, who commuted to Suffolk on weekends to see his family during the school year. ``The Ravenscroft experience has been good for me but it was a chance to come back home and be a head coach again.''
