MAN SURRENDERS AFTER 2 1/2-HOUR POLICE STANDOFF

{LEAD} Hostage negotiators coaxed a Navy man with a 9 mm handgun out of his South Street townhouse Friday after a 2 1/2-hour standoff.

No one was injured.

{REST} Matthew Guise, 27, of the 700 block of South Street, was turned over to naval authorities after he surrendered at 12:48 p.m., said G.A. Brown, Portsmouth Police Department spokesman.

Guise apparently had an argument with his wife Friday morning after she removed the couple's two children from the townhouse. He picked up a 9 mm handgun and refused to relinquish it, Brown said.

Portsmouth police received an out-of-state telephone call at 10:18 a.m., alerting them to a problem at the Guise household, Brown said.

Police eventually talked with Guise by telephone and persuaded him to leave the house.

Brown said no charges were filed against Guise.
