\ AUSTRALIA IS TRYING\ Big problem for Americans interested in going Down Under: cost and distance. Especially from the East Coast, Sydney is a long way to go for a one-week vacation. But Qantas has come up with an economical compromise: 10-day ``weekend to weekend'' tours priced from $1,159, including economy air fare from Los Angeles, lodging and transfers, and some meals and car rental or land tours. Among packages are ``Fly/Drive Australia,'' ``Sydney and Wine Country Explorer'' and ``Host Farm & B&B Getaway.'' Info: A local travel agent or Qantas Vacations (800) 523-5272.

Cycling is on traffic-free back roads with gentle terrain for riders of any ability. Participants stop at Kentucky Horse Park and Shaker Village in Pleasant Hill, and tour Harrodsburg, Kentucky's oldest town. Participants spend nights in antique-furnished inns along the way and eat traditional Kentucky cooking. Cost: $1,045 per person, double occupancy, including lodging, meals and snacks, van support and guides. Not included: bike rental ($109) and round-trip air fare. Info: Backroads, 1516 Fifth St., Berkeley, Calif. 94710-1740; (800) 462-2848.

\ CANADIAN CHOO-CHOO\ A private train tour of British Columbia leaves Vancouver on Sept. 11 for 10 days' viewing of the Coast Range and the Canadian Rockies when fall foliage is at its peak.

The train travels only during the daytime, so passengers stay at hotels along the route. At some towns, tours are taken by motor coach. Informal evening dinner and entertainment programs at some stops give a glimpse of life in the north country. Meals and snacks are served on the train.

Cost: $1,695 from Seattle or Vancouver, including hotels, sightseeing and 17 meals. An optional four-day extension visits Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff. Not included: round-trip air fare to Seattle.
