``When I was really young, my dad was training for road races,'' she said. ``I started running with him when I was about 9. I just kept doing that.''
{REST} In junior high school she ran track. At Great Bridge High School she also competed, once running a 3.1-mile cross-country event in 20 minutes and 15 seconds.
She attended Elon College in North Carolina, where it was rumored that a cross-country program would be formed. ``But I didn't really think it would happen,'' she said.
So she joined a running club.
Finally during her senior year, Hanbury earned a letter on Elon's first women's cross-country team.
``It was a lot of fun,'' she said. ``Really neat.''
During college, she majored in sports medicine. But after her junior year, she still had misgivings about career direction. Once again her dad's influence piqued her interest.
``My dad is a vocational rehabilitation counselor,'' she said. ``He told me about his profession. That's how I became interested.''
Last summer she volunteered 175 hours in the occupational therapy program at Portsmouth General Hospital. She helped patients with their breakfast, helped them get to therapy sessions and even assisted in some therapy.
``After spending that much time there I now know everything I would have to do as an occupational therapist,'' she said.
Some day she hopes to earn a degree in occupational therapy, but for now she's looking forward to her new job as a rehabilitation technician at Novacare.
