The Friday appointments were made to the State Council of Higher Education, the State Board of Community Colleges and a dozen institutions.
{REST} In some cases, Allen dumped board members appointed by Democratic predecessors and replaced them with fellow Republican partisans or party contributors.
Appointed to the State Council of Higher Education were: Donald N. Patten, a Newport News attorney; Elizabeth McClanahan, an Abingdon attorney; and Alan I. Kirshner of Montpelier, chief executive officer of Markel Corp.
Some well-known GOP officials, including former state party chairman Donald W. Huffman of Roanoke, were among Allen's selections. The Roanoke lawyer won a seat on the Virginia Tech board.
Robert J. Grey Jr. of Richmond, a Democrat who once served as chairman of the state's Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, was removed from the Virginia Tech board.
Democrats dropped from boards included Sybil Walker, the wife of Sen. Stanley C. Walker, D-Norfolk, who is the president pro tempore of the Virginia Senate. She was not reappointed to the governing board of Old Dominion University.
New members of the governing panel of the College of William and Mary are Linda A. Skladany of Alexandria, a former assistant dean at the University of Richmond law school; William F. Mirguet Jr. of Newport News, executive vice president of The FCR Group Inc.; Francis T. West of Martinsville, former owner, chairman and president of West Window Corp.; and Marguerite B. Davis of Williamsburg, who works for Royal Travel Center.
Allen declined to reappoint four members of the 12-person Virginia State University board. Mary Hatwood Futrell of Lorton, the former head of the National Education Association, lost her seat. She is to be succeeded by Preston Royster of Fairfax County.
Henry Harrell of Richmond, chairman and chief executive officer of Universal Leaf Tobacco Co. and Universal Corporation, joins the James Madison University board.
Reappointed to the board was Alexander B. Berry III of Richmond.
James Hazel of Richmond, a GOP activist and donor, joins George Mason University's board. He is vice president of The Vectre Corporation.
Heriot Clarkson of Richmond, corporate consultant with ESSROC, and Ann Woodfin of Richmond, who chairs the board of Woodfin Heating Inc., were named to the Virginia Military Institute's board of visitors. William W. Berry of Richmond, former chairman of Dominion Resources, was reappointed.
