RETAIL SALES: WINNERS AND LOSERS

{LEAD} Shifts in population and shopping habits led to some big changes in Hampton Roads retailing in 1993.

Winners in the region included Chesapeake and Williamsburg, while sales slipped in Portsmouth and Hampton.

{REST} Here's a rundown of retail sales by municipality for 1993 and how that compared with the year before:

Hampton Roads: $9.67 billion, up 7.4 percent.

Chesapeake: $1.32 billion, up 21.0 percent.

Gloucester County: $152.2 million, up 8.2 percent.

Hampton: $977.3 million, down 2.3 percent.

Isle of Wight County: $107.2 million, up 3.1 percent.

James City County: $382.2 million, down 0.8 percent.

Newport News: $1.04 billion, up 6.7 percent.

Norfolk: $1.78 billion, up 3.3 percent.

Poquoson: $25.5 million, up 3.2 percent.

Portsmouth: $402.1 million, down 2.4 percent.

Suffolk: $233.3 million, up 8.6 percent.

Virginia Beach: $2.66 billion, up 9.7 percent.

Williamsburg: $304.5 million, up 15.9 percent.

York County: $284 million, up 17.5 percent.
