PANEL TO SEARCH FOR NEW HEAD OF DIVISION OF MARINE FISHERIES

{LEAD} A seven-member committee has been appointed to conduct a national search for a new director of the Division of Marine Fisheries, officials of the Department of Environment, Health and Natural Resources announced Wednesday.

Before beginning its search, the committee will meet with various groups to discuss the qualifications needed in a new director.

{REST} Those meetings have not been scheduled but should occur in July, according to Joan Weld, assistant secretary for natural resources with DEHNR, who will head the committee. Other search committee members and the groups they represent are:

Robert V. Lucas, chairman of the Marine Fisheries Commission, will represent that group;

B.J. Copeland, director of the N.C. State Sea Grant Program, will represent the academic community;

Pete Rivenbark, law enforcement chief for the Wilmington District of the Division of Marine Fisheries, will represent that agency;

James A. Johnson Jr., president of the N.C. Fisheries Association, will represent commercial fishermen;

Mike Holleman, a member of the board of directors of the Atlantic Coast Conservation Association, will represent recreational fishermen;

Joseph Gregory, state director of agricultural services for Carolina Power & Light Co., will represent business.

Fisheries Director William T. Hogarth will leave his position July 1 and will be replaced by Bob Jamieson, supervisor of DEHNR's regional office in Wilmington, who will serve as regional director.

Officials of DEHNR said no time limit has been set for hiring a new director, but some within the agency say the search should take three to four months. by CNB
