WESTERN BRANCH, GREAT BRIDGE RULE THE ROSTER \

{LEAD} IT'S ONLY PROPER that regular-season champion Western Branch and runner-up Great Bridge, the Eastern Region titlist, should dominate the annual All-Southeastern District girls softball team.

The two powers grabbed six of the 10 first-team positions and five of the spots on the 11-player second unit. The teams were picked by the coaches of the district's eight schools.

{REST} Wilson's Leslie Livesay became a three-time selection as she was awarded the utility position. The shortstop/pitcher was picked as an infielder the past two years.

Two other players are repeaters from last year's first team - the Great Bridge battery of pitcher Stacey Adamson and catcher Marni Magyar.

Western Branch outfielder Jaci Morris was elevated from the 1993 second unit.

Also chosen from Great Bridge were outfielder Emily Ouzts and second baseman Kelly Black.

Western Branch also placed first baseman Calee Morris.

The other first-team members are Deep Creek's Melissa Roark and Heather Cahoon and Churchland's Shannon Bell. Roark and Bell are shortstops. Cahoon was picked as an outfielder.

The squad has four seniors, four juniors and two sophomores. The 10th graders are Jaci Morris and Calee Morris. Magyar, Bell, Black and Ouzts are juniors.

The picks are based upon regular-season play. Adamson compiled a 11-5-1 record with an earned run average of 2.19. She struck out 90 and walked only 17 in 118 innings. She went on to pitch Great Bridge to the state semifinals, finishing with a 17-6-1 record.

Magyar, a three-year starter for the Wildcats, hit .500 with 23 runs batted in and 26 runs scored. She had five home runs and only struck out four times in 51 trips to the plate.

Calee Morris was Western Branch's leading hitter with a .426 average. She had a .980 fielding average.

Black batted .327, stole 17 bases and was an exceptional infielder.

Bell led Churchland's hitters with a .567 average. She scored 30 runs, drove in 28 and hit six home runs.

Roark batted .395 and had a .912 fielding average. She had 17 stolen bases and seven RBIs.

Cahoon batted .500 with a 1.000 fielding average in district play plus 19 stolen bases and six runs batted in.

She will attend Chowan College in the fall and play volleyball as well as softball.

Ouzts had a .378 batting average and was the clean-up hitter for Great Bridge. She made only one fielding error in far-ranging coverage for a center fielder.

Jaci Morris also hit in the No. 4 spot for Western Branch. Morris batted .373, scored 34 runs and batted in 23. She is another outstanding defensive outfielder.

Livesay carried a .694 batting average, drove in 42 runs, scored 30 and blasted seven home runs.

Only one pitcher was named to the first unit this year. Western Branch's Nicole Belote, a sophomore who shared the spot with Adamson last season when two were picked, was chosen on the second team.

She had three teammates on the second unit - shortstop Evie Benson, third baseman Jennifer Sayko and outfielder Andrea Martin.

Two catchers, Wilson's Ivy Redford and Deep Creek's Jaynene Allen, were picked.

The other second-team selections were Great Bridge outfielder Dana Crisostomo, Wilson third baseman Wendy Wells, Wilson outfielder Sherry Miller and Churchland's Stacey Hundley, a third baseman, and utility Stephanie Pinchbeck. Pinchbeck was a first-team pick last year. Allen, Benson and Wells are repeaters on the second team.

Sixteen other players drew honorable mention.
