COLUMN HITS HOME

{LEAD} Your Sunday, June 12, Carolina Coast column about getting that ``100,000-mile mark high'' on your car did strike home for me.

I am making progress in that direction with my 1989 Dodge Omni. I added 337 miles to it when I made the long trek ``West'' to attend the 1994 Democratic Party State Convention held in faraway Raleigh. When I started out from Elizabeth City around 8:30 a.m. in the morning, 90,518 miles was showing on the odometer and when I finally arrived home ``plum tuckered out'' that evening, 90,855 miles glared at me from the odometer. So, I'm a scant 9,145 miles away from achieving that milestone mileage high! I'd better get the champagne in ice ready in the near future.

{REST} Added Note: The words that struck me amidst the rhetoric and speech-making at the convention was that, ``For the past three years, the national debt has been going down at a remarkable rate.'' It's encouraging that Congress is now working at a responsible, fiscal level.
