A native of Norfolk, he had been a Smithfield resident for 3 1/2 years. He retired from Smith & Keene Electric in 1987 after 10 years as a sheet metal mechanic. He served as assistant pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Virginia Beach until 1987 when he became a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and served on the board of trustees. He was a graduate of Indian River Welcome Baptist Bible College and was a 1990 independent candidate in the 4th district, coming in second to Norman Sisisky.
{REST} He is survived by his wife, Joyce M. McReynolds of Smithfield; one son, Rex Allen McReynolds of Norfolk; one stepson, Robert Ray Blevins Jr. of Hayes; four stepdaughters, Shirley Mummert of Gloucester Point, Lavinia Tyson of Gloucester, Molly Weidman and Martha Blevins of Smithfield; two brothers, Stephen F. McReynolds of Norfolk and Daniel G. McReynolds of South Dakota; four sisters, Glenda M. Gardner of Chesapeake, Daisy L. Rivenbark and Phyllis R. McReynolds of Norfolk and Sally I. Storck of North Carolina; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Lynn Hardaway of Fellowship Baptist Church, Taylor Road, Chesapeake at 2 p.m. today. Williamsburg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
