Charles Dail, an unaffiliated candidate who filed for the Dare County sheriff race last week, has been certified to appear on the ballot, county Elections Supervisor Lynda Midgett said Thursday.
Dail will run against three-term incumbent Democratic Sheriff A.L. ``Bert'' Austin on Nov. 8.
To qualify as an unaffiliated candidate, Dail had to get 561 signatures on a petition. He garnered 731 names total. Only 568 names qualified as registered, local voters, Midgett said.
Dail, a 48-year-old Colington Harbour resident, served as Nags Head's police chief from 1976 until 1984. He was part owner of Northeastern Protection Service Inc., a private investigators' firm, from 1983 until 1987. He now operates his own, one-man security company and does commercial fishing. by CNB
