A utilities worker laying underground pipe was seriously hurt Thursday when his leg became entangled in construction equipment, fire officials said.
The accident happened about 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Salem and Elbow roads. The victim, who was not identified, was an employee of Suburban Grading and Utilities, fire spokesman Chase Sargent said. He was laying underground pipe when heavy steel supports shifted and crushed his leg below the knee, nearly severing the limb.
Specialized Fire Department crews worked more than an hour to free the man. He was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where surgeons were trying to save the leg.
