President Clinton has nominated Vice Adm. Richard Macke, director of the Joint Staff, to the post of four-star admiral and commander in chief of U.S. forces in the Pacific, the Pentagon said Friday.
The move came one week after the Navy withdrew the name of the previous nominee, Adm. Stanley R. Arthur, after objections arose in Congress over his handling of a sexual harassment case.
Macke, a three-star admiral, had been nominated to take Arthur's place as the No. 2 admiral in the Navy, and his paperwork is already before Congress.
One reason Navy officials cited for withdrawing Arthur's name was the potential delay in filling the Pacific post, given the ongoing tension in relations with North Korea over its possible nuclear arsenal.
Macke, 56, is a veteran of more than 150 combat missions in Vietnam, and once served as commander of the Norfolk-based aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Sen. David Durenberger, R-Minn., had threatened to place a hold on Arthur's required Senate confirmation because of a sexual harassment case involving a Navy officer from Minnesota. by CNB
